7
Optimist or Pessimist?
  • A young man decides to become a stand-up comic.
His friends think he's nuts. He thinks he has a
chance so he ignores their comments and keeps
pursuing his goal. And because he keeps trying,
his chances keep increasing. True, he runs into
obstacles, but sees them as puzzles in need of a
    solution.

8
Optimist
  • Because of his positive attitude, he doesn't give
up. And do you know what happens to people who
don't give up? They reach their goal!

9
Communication Strategies
10
Passive
  • Doing something you don't want to do or making an
excuse rather than expressing your feelings.
  • A pessimist or type B personality may tend to use
    this technique.
  • Try to avoid conflict.

11
Aggressive
  • Involves blaming and criticizing.
  • It may include threatening or intimidating
    others.
  • A perfectionist or type A personality may use the
technique because they want things done their way
    and are impatient.

12
Assertive
  • Allows you to stand up for yourself without
    criticizing or blaming others.
  • Shows self confidence and self esteem.
  • Uses both verbal and nonverbal messages.
  • Uses I Messages and allows you to say no to
    people.
  • Can compromise with others.
