The Caliphate (Map Work)
  • The Muslim caliphate spread to Egypt and the
    coastal areas of North Africa to the Atlantic
    Ocean
  • Spain is the part of Europe that the caliphate
    controlled
  • In Asia the caliphate were eastern Mediterranean,
    Arabia, Persia, and part of India

Baghdad
  • The capital of caliphate was the city of Baghdad
  • Baghdad grew to about one million people
  • The imperial city of Rome and Baghdad and the
    striking similarities are the population,
    crowding, magnificent buildings, destination of
    roads, trade goods available and the status as
    world cities

Achievements of the Caliphate
  • Ibn, Sina, Avicenna were renowned Muslim doctors
  • Avicena and the other Arab doctors built their
    medical knowledge on Greek medical texts
  • Arab scholars borrowed from Hindu scholars by
    adopting to the Hindu numbering system and
    learned and then expanded on Hindu algebra
  • Astonomy is a study of stars and planets
  • Muslims were interested in this b/c they based
    their calendar on the moon, and the stars helped
    them find the direction of Mecca from wherever on
    earth they were.

  • Each mosque has a tall tower b/c it is a place
    from which Muslims can be called to prayer five
    times a day
  • The dome was the architectural structure that
    Muslims borrowed from Roman engineering

  • Islamic civilization borrowed from other
    civilizations in developing its literature b/c it
    incorporated Arabian tales, it took stories from
    Persia and India
