Japan (1854)
  • Wanted to trade with isolated Japan
  • Japan felt that too much trade would destroy
    culture
  • Forced them into a trade treaty (Commodore
    Matthew Perry sent to negotiate treaty)

  • They couldnt compete with U.S. technology and
    weapons decided to accept treaty
  • Signed treaty to open trade
  • Japan started to modernized quickly shortly after

Alaska (1867)
  • Russia going through hard economic times
  • Afraid of losing Alaska territory through
    conflict in the future
  • Decided to sell the U.S. for 7.2 million (about
    1.67 billion today)

  • This gain was nicknamed Sewards Folly by many
    because the public thought it was foolish to give
    so much money to Russia it was backed by
    Secretary of State William Seward

Hawaii (1898)
  • U.S. found Hawaii (own country) good for planting
    sugar
  • They set up U.S. plantations and suspended
    tariffs
  • The McKinley tariff (passed in 1890) made
    Hawaiian sugar become more expensive than
    American sugar

  • Hawaiian economy started to crash
  • Queen Liluokalani not happy about American
    influence pushed for more power
  • Planters rebelled (with help of U.S. marines)
  • Hawaii annexed to U.S. 5 years later

  • U.S. drawn to China not by conquest but commerce
  • Excited by large Chinese market
  • China argued with Japan over Korea
  • Japan defeated China (showed Chinas weakness)
    surprised everybody

    which they saved Japan from seizing (Manchuria)
  • France, England, and Germany backed Russia and
    forced leasing too
  • Land belonged to country, but resources belong to
    foreign country and control economy
