AMS TIM Tracker status CERN 21/07/04 Eric
Perrin (GE) for the Tracker team Towards
Integration 1) Component status 2)
Integration steps 3) Milestones
2
1) STATUS OF COMPONENTS 1.1) Detector
ladders Complete tracker has 192 ladders 14
spares 206 Today 77 are complete, tested
and 49 are mounted on planes 37 are in Geneva
being processed (phase 2 or shielding) 23 are in
stand by, waiting for further tests, repairs 51
are in INFN Perugia 18 still to be fabricated by
GA until November 04 gt The last ladders
will be delivered to Uni of Geneva in Dec 04
3
1.2) Inner planes All three planes are ready to
be equipped with ladders. Layers L2 and L4 are
already complete.
1.3) Outer planes P1 and P5 are ready to be
equipped with thermal bars All thermal bars are
made.
4
1.4) Tracker Shell All AMS02 modifications needed
are made. Dry assembly with the 3 Inner
planes is done but some re-check at the level of
thermal connectors is needed. 1.5) Conical
flanges (RWTH) First flange has been laminated
by FVT (Aachen). Prepregs for the second one are
expected by FVT at the end of August All detail
drawings made Final verification
underway Machining scheduled at IPT (Aachen) in
September - October. Light traps have been
finalised and are ready for production (GE)
5
Reminder Structural verification - Contraves
report AMS-ANR-002 (1999) demonstrated the
feasability of mounting ladders on both faces of
the AMS01 inner planes. - Contraves report
W-ET99.11.15-1covers the verifications made for
new inserts in plane 1 and 5. - Isatec has done
FEA to establish the lay-up of the conical
flange. - Isatec has FE analysed the complete
Tracker model First eigenfrequency 56Hz (Inner
planes 2 and 4) All Margins of Safety are
positive. The mass of the Tracker itself (149.5
kg) used in the simulations (mass contained
inside the Tracker volume only) has been verified.
6
1.6) Cooling loops (evaporators)
manufacturing Nikhef - Geneva workpackage. Complet
e loop design is finalized, final FEA model is in
production Detail drawings in progress.
7
Thermal bridges manufacture GE - Done for inner
planes - Fabrication drawings in progress - Mfg
scheduled this autumn for outer planes. Laser
welds Nikhef Shell, done All production laser
weldings are made and tested according to spec
document ASR-S-001which is approved by NASA.
(proof 240 bars N2 - Burst approx 750
bars). Delivery expected at Nikhef next week Pre
and post weld samples will be sent to NASA for
inspection.
8
- All the hardware for the inner loop is at
Nikhef, ready for the soldered assembly. -
Tooling (2x) to assemble / install inner loop
GE Nikhef ready to be tested. Tooling to
assemble / install outer loop drawings not yet
started - Connectors Contact has been taken with
Resistoflex for the Dynatube connectors. The goal
being to weld the 4mm x 0.7mm tube to the
connector with a NASA approved welding procedure.
9
2) TRACKER INTEGRATION A complete procedure
exists - a few details need updating 1) Ladder
phase 2 2) Ladder shielding / test 3) Mount
ladders on planes 4) Dry assembly 5) Assemble the
3 inner planes with the shell. -------------------
--------------------------------------- 6) Mount
conical flanges 7) Mount Tracker feets 8) Unfold
and fasten inner planes cables 9) Mount cooling
loops (evaporators) 10) Mount outer planes 11)
Route and connect cables 12) Mount, test TAS
system
GE
GE or/and CERN
System test Final integration
10
2.1) Ladder phase 2 - Ladder feet bonding - Anti
peel and light tightness bonded on hybrids. -
Hybrid box mounted - Visual inspection / test
Ladder foot
11
2.2) Ladder shielding
12
(No Transcript)
13
QA for mounting ladders on plane - Every ladder
is fully tested prior installation on plane -
Ladder mounting according to procedure - Each
screw to be secured has an individual sign-off -
Gap between ladders is checked and recorded. -
All ladders are re-tested after completion of a
Layer.
14
2.4) Dry assembly of the Tracker structure will
be made before real integration. To verify
the Interfaces (mountability) - Conical flanges
to shell. - Conical flanges to Plane 1 resp.
Plane 5. - Top conical flange to Star-Tracker
support - Cooling loop assembly tool to
Tracker Will be done as soon as the conical
flanges are available Star-Tracker lower
supports have to be bonded to the Z conical
flange. This has to be done - In Spring-Summer
2005 (during Tracker assembly)
15
2.5) Assemble the 3 Inner Planes with the shell
- Plane 2 and 4 have to be pre-cabled including
cables for plane 3 - Done with  Frankenstein
machine - Use of Zerodur bars AMS01 Flanges as
assembly tools. Steps - Position the 3 planes
inside machine - Connect P3 cables - Connect
thermal connections - Test all ladders - Mount
shell sectors B-field sensors needed At this
stage we have the 3 inner planes in the shell
still fastened to the AMS1 flange(s).
For P2 P4, Structure to support cables
16
INTEGRATION INTO THE MAGNET - Transport
tracker to assy hall - Mount top conical
flange - Mount Tracker feets - Insert Tracker
into the Magnet vacuum case - Fasten top Tracker
feets - Mount lower conical flange - Fasten
lower Tracker feets - Unfold Inner Tracker
cables, support on VC - Mount top cooling
loops - Mount lower cooling loops - Connect and
test cooling loops - Mount Plane 1, connect P1
cables - Mount Plane 5, connect P5 cables -
Mount TAS system, test - Mount Star-Tracker
17
Tracker cables The 192 pairs of flat cables have
been produced to exact length with connectors
at both ends and delivered. Detailed cable
routing, folding and the ladder-TDR connections
have been defined on mock-ups.
