1HSDL High School Distance Learning
2What is Kirkwood HSDL?
- Kirkwoods high school correspondence program
started over 30 years ago to help meet the needs
of students across Iowa. - We offer high school credit transfer courses to
districts across Iowa in a variety of subject
areas. - In that time, thousands of students have earned
high school credit. - With the addition of online courses, we have
changed our name to Kirkwood HSDL to better
reflect the services we provide.
3Why would a student take a distance learning
course?
- There are a number of reasons why a student would
take a distance learning course. - The main reason students take our courses is for
credit recovery. - In some instances, their schedules or physical
condition do not allow them to take needed
classes at their local school. - We also have some students take our courses for
credit advancement. - Courses are often taken as a summer school option.
4What types of courses are offered?
- Correspondence Courses
- Students receive a textbook and workbook mailed
to the local school. - Students complete the homework portions and then
take a proctored exam. - The exam and homework are then mailed back to
Kirkwood HSDL for evaluation.
5What types of courses are offered?
- Online Courses
- Kirkwood has partnered with APEX learning to
offer a series of credit-recovery, web-based
courses. - Students can access course material from any
computer, anywhere, at anytime. - Textbooks are not required for most courses.
Students take exams on paper in the presence of a
proctor.
6What courses are offered?
- Blackboard CE6 Physics
- We also offer a self-designed course in Physics.
- The course meets the requirements of the College
of Nursing at the University of Iowa. - Students use Kirkwoods e-learning platform to
access content.
7What courses are offered?
- ICN Courses
- Kirkwood works with school districts to
coordinate the sharing of high school credit
courses using the Iowa Communications Network
(ICN.) - We currently have German I and II offered in this
format and are working on additional offering for
the 2009-2010 school year.
8What courses are offered?
- Replacement Units
- This option is only available to students who
have previously failed a course. - We will work with districts to align our online
courses to a districts course. - After a review of course syllabi, your school
district selects the necessary units from our
online course.
9What courses are offered?
- Replacement Units
- The student then retakes the corresponding units
to fulfill the course requirements, and after
successful completion, Kirkwood HSDL will report
the students scores on the replacement units to
the local school, who will then recalculate the
students grade.
