Magna Carta

Magna Carta Causes Changes in England
  • This document listing rights that the king could
not ignore was called Magna Carta. It is a Latin
phrase meaning Great Charter. The document was
written by a group of nobles in 1215.

4
The Effects of Magna Carta
  • This document required the king to honor certain
rights and it began to establish a democratic
    government.
  • Examples
  • Habeas Corpus- you have the body You cannot be
    kept in
  • jail without a reason
  • 31- Neither we nor any royal official will take
wood for out castle, or for any other purpose,
without the consent of the owner
  • 38- In future no official shall place a man on
trial upon his own unsupported statement,
without producing credible witnesses to the
    truth of it

Changes after Magna Carta
  • Magna Carta inspired the English to find more
ways to limit the kings power. The council
developed into Parliament, the law-making body
that governs England today. Over the years,
membership in Parliament was opened to knights
    and town leaders.

The Hundred Years War
7
Course of the War
  • This war lasted about 100 years. In 1328, the
king of France died with no sons, and two men
claimed his throne. One was French and the other
was the king of England. In the end, the French
man became king. The English king later invaded
France. This invasion began a long conflict
between England and France (The Hundred Years
War). After 100 years of fighting, a teenage
peasant girl, Joan of Arc, rallied the French
    troops.

8
Results of the War
  • In England, Parliaments power grew because the
king needed Parliaments approval to raise money
to pay for the costly war. In France, the kings
power grew. During the war, the king had become
popular with his nobles. Fighting the English
had created a bond between them. As a result,
the nobles supported the king after the war as
    well.

The Black Death
10
Where it came fromHow it SpreadWhat disease it
was
  • The Plague originally came from central and
eastern Asia. Unknowingly, traders brought rats
carrying disease to Mediterranean ports in 1347.
From there it quickly swept throughout most of
    Europe.
  • -This wiped out 25 million people
  • -Plague survivors found their skill in demand and
charged a lot more for their work
