    Pilgrims visited religious places
  • Church officials often became political advisors
    to local rulers.

The monks of Cluny
  • A Religious Order is a group of people who
dedicated their lives to religion and follow
    common rules.
  • People like women who lived apart from society
    made their own rules

existence of God.Laws were created by religious
leaders.Students took tests now and ten about
what they learned.

The church and the arts

Religious architecture
  • People were inspired by religious expression by
the art that churches used. For example, their
spires and high ceilings and colorful glass
windows were made to bring people closer to God.

11
Magna Carta causes change in England
12
Magna Carta
  • Magna Carta is a document written by English
nobles and signed by King John listing rights the
    king could not ignore.

13
Who demanded this agreement?
  • A group of English nobles in 1215 decided to
force the king to respect their rights.
  • They made King John approve a document listing
rights the king could not ignore.

14
Effects of Magna Carta
15
What are the effects of Magna Carta?
  • No one could be kept in jail without reason, and
even the king had to follow these laws.
  • The charter became a key principle of English
government and an important step into the
    development of democracy.

16
Three demands
  • Have to have reason to be kept in jail
  • King also had to obey the laws
  • King could no longer put people in jail whenever
    he wanted to

17
Changes after Magna Carta
18
What did the Magna Carta inspire the noble to do?
  • The Magna Carta inspired the noble to give advise
or money to the king whenever he asked for it.

19
Parliament
  • Parliament the lawmaking body that still
    governs today.

20
How did the king limit Magna Carta ?
  • The king limited the Magna Carta by facing with
    war and financial troubles.

21
Student Magna Carta
  • Democratic principles played a major role in the
development of Magna Carta in England. These same
principles that apply to the rights of free men
and women are present in our own constitution.
  • To demonstrate your understanding of these
principles, students will create three demands
that you would seek in creating your own Magna
    Carta for class.

22
The 100 years war
23
The course of the war
  • The course of the war was between England and
    France.

24
French king dies with no heirs
  • The war started when the English king tried to
    take control of Frances throne.
  • England invaded France and won many key battles
until a peasant girl, Joan of Arc, rallied the
    French troops.

25
Two men claim throne
  • Two men claimed the throne but they both wanted
the power and that caused a lot of conflict
    between them both.

26
English take the lead
  • In England, the war helped increase the power of
parliament because the king needed parliaments
approval to raise money to pay for the war.
  • In France after the war, the kings power grew
    much larger.

27
Joan of Arc
  • Joan of Arc is a teenage peasant girl who rallied
the French troops and turned the tide of the
    Hundred Years War.

28
Results of the war
  • The English caught and killed Joan, but
eventually the French won the war.

29
Changes in England
  • The war helped England by the parliament helping
    raise money.

30
Changes in France
  • In France the kings power grew.

31
Democracy in France will have to wait
  • In England they have a lawmaking body that
governs them called parliament while France does
    not.

32
Black death
33
Where it came from
  • It swept through Europe between 1347 and 1351.
  • It originally came from central and Eastern Asia.

34
How it spread
  • It spread by fleas that fed on infected rats
that passed on to the people.

35
What the disease was
  • The disease was a deadly plague that killed
millions of Europeans between 1347 and 1351.

36
Effect on manor life and feudalism/how many died?
  • This disease caused sweeping changes all over
Europe. The old manor system, already weakened by
    the growth of cities, collapsed.
  • Some historians think that the Black Death killed
    over a third of Europes population-perhaps 25
    million people.

37
What happened to it
  • Although it was a disease from long ago it is
still around today. But long ago they didnt have
anything to keep it away. But now we have
something that we can take to keep it away.
