societal health what smoking is to your physical
health (Thornburgh, 2006).
6How Large Is The Problem?

equaled 536,482 or 28.52 and is growing!

grade education.
- 24 of its population have between 9th and 12th

7Are we aggressively fighting the odds? Can
we do it without the help of others?
- WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT?

Family chases dreams by Lucy Weber, Madison
Co. Herald
A mother-daughter duo figure they can tackle
getting their high school equivalency degrees by
sticking together. Brandi Ashley, 19, and her
mother, Dessie, both of whom live outside Canton,
are encouraging each other in classes at the Paul
Griffin Library in Camden designed to prepare
them for the GED test. "I told her I'd come if
she would come," said Brandi, who dropped out of
school after the 10th grade to start her family.
The two are part of a 14-member class meeting
at the Camden branch library two days each week
to prepare for the General Educational
Development test.
18GED classes changing lives Tammy Logan took a l
eap of faith at age 42. The mother of four and
grandmother of one, who dropped out of school
when she left home at 14, realized she needed her
high school equivalency degree to get the job she
wantedWhen she passed the test in August, Logan
became the first person to receive her GED
through the Camden program, which is in its
second year.
"Logan had three interviews with the organization
(United Blood Services) before anyone noticed
that she hadn't graduated from high school, a
requirement for the job of donor care specialist
That was the boost I needed to overcome my
fear, she said. I swallowed my pride and came
to classes. On a Saturday in August, a big,
bulky enveloped arrived in her mailbox with her
GED certificate. It chokes me up to this day,
she said. Two days later, she was back for
another job interview, certificate in hand.
Within days, she was on the job.
