The Media
How do the media present sport?
When you read about sport, or watch it on TV or
listen on the radio it is not like being there in
person. The event has been PACKAGED by people
working in the media. Think about the aspects
that go into making a highlights programme such
as MATCH OF THE DAY. There are several people who
decide what you see camera operators and video
editors decide which angle and shots you see
producers decide who is interviewed and what
parts of the interview to show. What you often
see is more exciting than the whole event.

The Media
POSITIVE
  • The media helps to promote sport. Sports events
are seen, heard and read about by millions.
  • The media creates Sports Stars who may inspire
    young sportspeople.
  • When a sport gets media attention, participation
    generally rises.
  • Sports that get media attention tend to attract
    sponsorship more easily.
  • The media can educate and inform about sport.
  • The media pay vast sums of money to Governing
Bodies which is often used to develop grass roots
    sport.

The Media
NEGATIVE
  • Media exposure can foster a win at all costs
    attitude.
  • There is intense pressure on coaches, manager
    and performers to get results.
  • Sports Stars may lose privacy and have their
    private lives invaded.
  • The media can force changes on a sport (e.g.
Rugby League 1996 and the tennis tie break).
  • The media can often over-sensationalise events

Information Technology
Many people are able to access IT both at school
/ work and at home. The internet is a huge
resource for sporting information and provides
lots of information on sport. Many smaller
sports, clubs and individuals can provide
information to a wider audience thanks to the
web.

This is called a monopoly. The European
