1x Data Network Overview
4
Overview
  • What is 1X?
  • Drivers and Benefits
  • Air Interface Characteristics
  • Service Customization
  • Summary

5
What is 1X?
  • 1xRTT - first step in themigration to Third
    Generation(3G) wireless networktechnologies.
  • CDMA radio access technology based on the IS-2000
family of standards, and evolved from current 2G
    standards
  • Promises to deliver cost-effective solution to
    achieving network capacity improvements and
    delivery of packet data services

6
Drivers
  • Demand and Opportunities of the Wireless Internet
  • Need for high-speed, wireless data access to
support next generation of devices and services
  • New revenue opportunities as wireless network
    accessshifts from voice to data
  • Capacity Constraints on Current Digital Network
  • Need for more spectrum-efficient technologies to
alleviate current network congestion in major
    serving areas
  • Desire to Leverage Existing Network
    Infrastructure
  • Migration path must be smooth, to capitalize on
    existing network investments

7
Benefits of 1X
  • Increased Data Speeds
  • Peak speeds of 153kbps far exceeds current
    14.4kbps
  • Migration to packet-based data from current
    circuit-switched
  • Capacity Increases
  • 50 improvement over current voice capacity due
    to fast forward power control
  • Backwards Compatibility Smooth Migration
  • Can be deployed into existing 1.25MHz allocations
  • IS2000 is backwards compatible with IS-95 phones
  • Reuse of existing network infrastructure
  • Extended Battery Life
  • Up to 2x increase in battery life (standby mode)

8
Air Interface Throughput
  • Throughput Capability
  • Data terminal profile maximum throughput speeds
ranging from 9.6 kbps to 153 kbps
  • Current market offerings 9.6 kbps for Mobile
Browser service (WAP) and 86 kbps for Data to Go
    service (Phone tethered to computer)
  • Realized Throughput Variation
  • Air Interface congestion at that moment in time
  • Air Interface high error rate due to coverage
    issue
  • Wireless network resource congestion (Unlikely)
  • Internet congestion
  • End content server response time

9
Air Interface Modes
  • New modes of data terminal operation
  • Active end-to-end resources assigned, data
    transferred
  • Null no resources assigned, no data transferred
  • Dormant PPP state maintained back to PDSN, but
most network resources not assigned, no data
    transferred
  • Why???
  • Typical data calls (eg - web, email) do not
require radio and core network resources when
data is not being transferred (eg - read time)

10
Air Interface Modes
11
Air Interface Modes
  • Active to Dormant Timer
  • If no data is transferred during a 20 second
period the RF channel is torn down. The PPP
    session is maintained.
  • As soon a data is sent or received the RF Channel
is re-established and the data transferred.

12
Service Customization
  • Custom NAI
  • Service specific NAI (eg. username_at_example.com)
  • Custom IP pool assignment. Private or Public
  • Session attributes are configurable (eg PPP Idle
    Timer)
  • Proxy Authentication supported
  • Firewall rules can restrict destination and port
  • Network Initiated Tunnel
  • PDSN supports various tunneling protocols (eg.
    L2TP and IPSec)
  • Local authentication of user at tunnel
termination point for VPN type service.

13
Summary
  • 1X is a major step towards migrating to
    high-speed, third generation data networks,
ushering in the advent of the wireless internet
  • Devices and applications promise to provide
    innovative and compelling customer experiences
  • The 1X network has the throughput and
functionality to enable the next killer
    application

Text Messaging The Other Information Highway
15
Why SMS?
  • All Digital Phones are Mobile Termination Ready
  • All new Digital Phones Support 2-Way SMS
  • Functions even in Weak Coverage
  • Functional in Analog Coverage
  • IS-91A supports Max. 14 Chars
  • Limited Character Set
  • Similar to Datagram and requires no session
    set-up
  • Fast and Reliable Performance
  • Limitations
  • Maximum Message Size is 140 Characters
  • Not Suitable for Session Orientated and Real-time
    Applications

16
Bell Mobility SMS Overview
  • Text Messaging (i.e. SMS) was
  • launched in May 1998
  • Voicemail Notification
  • Web Email Access
  • TAP/TNPP
  • Callback Number (a.k.a Numeric Page)
  • Internet Messaging Gateway
  • XML/HTTP API
  • Login/ Logout, Submit/Delete Message, Query
    Status
  • TAP Gateway
  • Dispatch Applications
  • Local Access numbers
  • Notify and Others

17
Billing by Provider and Category
  • Price information based on the value
  • Content Provider Specifies category when
    submitting messages
  • BM applies rates based on the category
  • SMTP
  • 3 Ways to specify Provider and Category using
Sender Address, Subjects and Message Header
  • Available Since Q2, 01
  • SMPP
  • Support Versions 3.3 and 3.4
  • Multiple ways to specify Provider and Category.
  • VPN connections to ensure data security
  • Features include Registered Delivery, Urgent
    Priority, Callback Number and others
  • Field trial underway

18
2-Way Text Messaging
  • Launched in June, 2001
  • Enables Peer-to-Peer Messaging
  • Inter-Carrier Messaging Service (launched April,
2002) extends the reach to subscribers of other
    carriers
  • Mobile Origination to email expands the
    communication to the Internet
