Election of 1824
  • Jackson receives the most Electoral Votes but
    does not get a majority.
  • House of Rep. votes and decides to give the
    presidency to Adams.

The Corrupt Bargain
  • Henry Clay had used his influence in the House to
    swing support to Adams.
  • Just days later Clay is appointed to become
    Secretary of State for Adams.

  • Huge voter turnout due to states allowing men
    without property to vote!
  • Jackson wins by a landslide trouncing Adams with
    178 electoral votes to Adams 83.

  • Jackson used his veto more then all the preceding
    presidents combined.
  • He became nicknamed King Andrew I

    jobs to friends and sponsors.
  • Spoils System Nickname for Jacksons use of
    Patronage upon entering office.

  • Jackson hated the Bank of the U.S. and wanted to
    destroy it.
  • He vetoed the bill to recharter the bank and
    essentially killed it.

Tariff of 1828
  • South Carolina called a the tariff of 1828 the
    Tariff of Abominations and wanted to nullify
    (not obey) it.
  • Jackson threatened to send down 50,000 troops.
  • Eventually a compromise was reached and the
    threat was avoided.

  • State of Georgia tries to take seize land from
    Cherokees living there.
  • Cherokees say its their land and take the issue
    to the Supreme Court in Worcester vs. Georgia.
  • Supreme court rules in favor of Cherokee and say
    its their land.

  • Andrew Jackson refuses to send troops to uphold
    the ruling of the Supreme Court.
  • 15,000 Cherokee Indians are forced to march 1,000
    miles where 1 out of 4 died on the deadly trek.
