Web Content Discussion
  • The problem
  • Everyone wants relevant up to date content about
their department up on the web.

15
Web Content Discussion - Issues
  • The issues
  • Who creates and edits content
  • The technical experts, really don't have expert
knowlege of the subject matter and also have
other "technical" things they should be doing.
  • The subject matter experts are non-technical and
would really rather not maintain the content at
all. It has to be simple or they just won't use
    it.

16
Web Content Discussion - Issues
  • Control of formatting
  • The University wants a consistent look and feel
  • We appeal to a broad audience from all economic
backgrounds and from all over the world, so we
need higher than average browser compatibility
    and standards compliance.
  • Attractive, consistent, high compatibility
formatting requires a high level of skill and
knowledge to achieve, which puts it outside the
    range of the average user.
  • There needs to be some balance, as total
uniformity does not allow for different contexts
to have their own identity, which can make a site
    less easy to use.
  • There is increasing desire to format pages for
viewing on mobile devices. This could double the
work of maintaining content if not automated, but
will probably impose new formatting restrictions
    if it is.

17
Web Content Discussion Solutions
  • The solution A content management system? A
    wiki?
  • There are just too many products/projects out
there to look at all of them
  • Either too rigid or too difficult to learn
  • How do you get your data back out of the system,
so you can move it to the next big thing
