Title: Embedded Passives Emulation
1Embedded Passives Emulation NEPP Crane
PCK-5
Description
Plan
- Convert an existing board design to a design with
embedded passives by leveraging NEPP funds with
NavSEA Crane (Indiana) ECIT and IPC. - Optimize/select appropriate components for
embedding (JPL/Crane) - Conduct performance modeling (old vs new)
(Crane/support from JPL) - Layout boards (Crane)
- Fabricate boards (Crane)
- Assemble boards (JPL)
- Electrical performance test (JPL)
- Joint summary report (Crane/JPL)
The use of Embedded Passives will increase the
overall Reliability of Assemblies in NASA
Projects. These Assemblies can be made smaller
and lighter as compared to standard assemblies
which may allow for more functionality in the
same design space. NavSEA Crane is conducting an
Emulator Project in conjunction with IPC where
they will convert 3 existing board designs in the
Military, Aerospace and Space Industries to an
Embedded Passives board design. This task
proposes to participate with the Crane/IPC
Emulator Project as one of the designs. This
task will allow NASA to participate with NavSEA
Crane and IPC to influence the development of
Standards for Embedded Passives in
Military/Aerospace and Space Printed Circuit
Boards. Crane is chartered and has funding to
infuse Embedded Passives Technology into the
Aerospace and Space industries. This task will
leverage NEPP and Crane funding to convert a
Universal (JPL) Actuator Design to an Embedded
Passives design.

the technology by reading the final report if the
technology supports the performance needed by a
future project.
