Title: Globalization of HEP

1
Globalization of HEP
  • Subgroup of Young Physicists Forum steering
    committee
  • Véronique Boisvert, John Krane, Gudrid
    Moortgat-Pick, Mark Palmer, Manuel Toharia

2
Overview
  • Demise of SSC
  • Lack of international cooperation in the project
  • International Cooperation in HEP
  • Steering of long-term decisions
  • Funding and Construction of Large Projects
  • Operation of Large Projects

3
International Cooperation
  • Right now no international steering group
  • Now Ad hoc committees form, report, disband
  • Could have a semi-permanent advisory group,
    eventually some funding control?
  • Important to have government representatives
  • Theorists, particle phys., accelerator phys. all
    need to be represented
  • Disadvantages
  • Loss of national pride
  • Possible HEP budget decrease?

4
The International Laboratory
  • National facilities
  • Operated by host country, planning, project
    definition done in int. coll.
  • Larger facilities
  • Operated by host country, construction by several
    countries
  • HERA model
  • Very large projects
  • needing a coll. of several countries with
comparable share of the total construction and
    operation cost
  • Never been done before
  • Very large projects
  • in the frame of an international organization
  • CERN model

From
ICFA
5
Regional Centers
  • Distance is a barrier for effective
contributions, specially for young physicists !
  • Possible solution is Regional Centers
  • Laboratory where
  • remote operation of the accelerator and detectors
  • data processing
  • Make use of current national laboratories
  • Dont have to travel too far attract students
  • Funding agencies will like the periodic control
  • Host lab doesnt get completely overwhelmed
  • Disadvantage cost ! , viability?

6
What you should be thinking about while at
Snowmass
  • Can and should the field start a planning process
at an international level? How? Etc.
  • What should be the structure of a future
    International Laboratory?
  • Are the benefits of Regional Centers worth the
    costs?
  • How can we solve the problem of separation for
    young physicists?
