21. General remarks from the German case
- Different types of rural regions
- rural regions in the neighbourhood of
agglomerations - rural regions with a very high dynamic
independent development - rural regions with high potentials in agriculture
and/or tourism - rural regions with strong structural weakness

63. Analysing the development of rural regions
- population development 1990-2000 - natural
balance and net-migration 1995-2000 - development
of labour force 1990-2000 - development of gross
regional product 1990-2000

9Correlation coefficient of the development of
labour force and of gross regional product with
total structural weakness (only significant
coefficients by 5)
104. Results
Rural regions with structural weakness
- suffer more from negativ or substandard
development.
- become a disassociated position from the
national development
- some rural regions with ageing and decreasing
population are in danger to skid into the class
with the strongest structural weakness.

124. Results
Structural weakness is not a typology more a
classification, but
- Reduction of the diversity within the rural
area is statistical significant only for the
indicators population development and
net-migration
- The development of other rural regions (with
less structural weakness) depends more on other
factors/potentials. Here a high diversity between
rural regions still exists.
-Structural weakness does not offer valuable
clues to the development of rural regions for
Austria, Ireland, Greece and to some extend
France and Czech Rebublic).
- Further investigation is necessary (deepening
the indicator based analyses, case studies).
