Title: Propaganda

1
Propaganda
  • The real thing this time
  • TAKE NOTES!

2
What is Propaganda
  • Propaganda is any rumor or idea or fact which is
spread in order to convince someone of something.
  • It may be truthful or not
  • One sided

3
Purpose
  • To convince
  • Techniques used are persuasive
  • Techniques of argument

4
Many Techniques
  • 15 different techniques that use different types
    of persuasion

5
Bandwagon
  • Other people do it, so join the group
  • Example Everybody in the know is going to Als
All Night Nightmare Party. Dont miss out. Join
    us.

6
Repetition
  • If I repeat myself often enough, youll accept
    the idea
  • Example
  • The old things are the best. And thats what
Moms Apple Pie Mix is. An old-fashioned recipe
for old-time tastes. Nothing beats the taste of
    old-time down-home cooking.

7
Transfer
  • Ill show you something you like. Then youll
transfer your good feelings about it to my
    product or idea.
  • Works the opposite way as well
  • Example A professional golfer is shown using
    GREENGRASS on her lawn.

8
Testimonial
  • Ill get somebody famous to say that my idea is
good, and then youll be more likely to believe
    it.
  • Example A profession golfer is shown holding a
box of GREEENGRASS and saying, This makes my
lawn look like a putting green.

9
Exigency
  • Youre going to have to act fast if you want to
get in on this, because Im not going to hold
    this offer open long.
  • Example Well give you the deal if you act now!

10
Free
  • Ill give you something for nothing.
  • Example If you buy 3 tires, well give you the
    fourth 1 free.

11
Bargain
  • Ill give you more than youre paying for.
  • Example Well give a free radio to the first 100
people who buy 20 worth of merchandise tomorrow!
  • Combines exigency, free, and bargain

12
Glittering Generalities
  • Ill use words which will sound good to you. But
the words will be so general that you wont be
able to pin down exactly what Im promising
  • Example Its time to get our state government
back on the right track! Its time to stop
wasteful government spending. Its time to stop
    welfare cheaters. Vote for me!

13
Innuendo
  • I wont really say that the other product or idea
is no good, but Ill do a good job of hinting
around at it. Thatll help make you think its
    true.
  • Example And just why did she dance all around my
question without answering it? Could it be that
she doesnt want to let us know where she really
    stands on this issue?

14
Name Calling
  • Ill use emotionally loaded words, and then
youll react emotionally instead of logically.
  • Example This good-for-nothing, lowdown, rotten
so-called better living plan is nothing but a
sneaky underhanded attempt to take away our
    rights!

15
Card Stacking
  • Ill only tell you one side of the story. Maybe
you wont stop to think about arguments for the
    other side.
  • Example You dont want to be a nurse. You have
to go through all that training, and then what do
you get? You work with sick, crabby people and
take orders from doctors who dont know the
    patients as well as you

16
Oversimplifying
  • Ill give you a simple solution for a complex
problem. I wont mention that my solution doesnt
cover all the angles. Well maybe Ill mention it,
but Ill make it sound unimportant.

17
Snob
  • Youre a really superior person if you go along
    with my ideas
  • Example Youre one of the few people in your
    area to be selected.

18
Just Plain Folks
  • Hey, Im just like you are, so I know youll go
    along with my idea.

19
Flag-waving
  • Youre patriotic if you go along with my idea.
    Youre unpatriotic if you dont.
  • Example Now you know and I know that any
self-respecting American will see through this
Communist plot to undermine our great countrys
    ideals
