• West Virginia is a U.S. state located in the
  Appalachian
• region of the Southern United States. It is

The state of West Virginia (WV) is located in the
South, South Atlantic Division, is called the
"State of the Mountain" ("Mountain State") for
the Appalachian Mountains extending across its
eastern sector. Its area of 62,758 square
kilometers, gives the forty first among national
entities. Its capital is Charleston. Other major
cities of the state are Huntington, Wheeling,
Parkersburg and Morgantown. A total of 1 million
852 thousand inhabitants form its population. Of

along most every valley and hillside, and is
universally admired for their beauty and
fragrance.

saccharum) as the official state tree in 1949,
after a vote by public school students and civic
organizations.
Sometimes called hard maple or rock maple, sugar
maple is one of the largest and more important
of the hardwoods. Sap from the trunksof sugar
maples is used to make maple syrup. Sugar maple
trees seldom flower until they are at least 22
years old, but they can also live 300 to 400
years.

Black bears are very intelligent, shy, and
secretive animals - actually seeing a bear in the
wild is a very rare experience. Black bears
(Ursus americanus) are not always black - there
are cinnamon, white, beige, and "blue" (slate
gray) black bears. Adult black bears vary
considerably in size, from 130 - 500 pounds
(occasionally as much as 700).. They can run
up to 30 mph and are good swimmers.

coal mining and its forest industry. It is also
known for its natural beauty and as a tourist
destination for those interested in outdoor
activities such as skiing, rafting , climbing,
fishing, hiking and hunting.

About the River
In West virginia there are about 46 rivers named
in West Virginia. There are also smaller streams
(ie, branches, streams, drains, forks, licks,
runs, etc.) in the state. Exclusive of the main
tributaries, as mentioned above there are about
46 rivers named in West Virginia. Although
relatively few in number, the rivers have
traditionally provided avenues easy transport
through the rough terrain of the mountain state,
first by Native Americans and later by European
settlers. Even today, the great rivers carry
large volumes of commercial goods, while the
smaller offer recreational opportunities such as
canoeing, fishing, swimming and rafting.
