• Of all the hurricanes which have hit the United
  States during the last hundred years, Hurricane
  Hugo caused the most damage in the Charlotte
  area. In fact, the damaging effect of this
  hurricane was severe on both property and
  infrastructure.

Dramatic entrance

• The house seemed ready to leave its foundation,
  the roof creaked and moaned, the wind howled
  against the windows, and debris was flying
  through the air. Hurricane Hugo had hit Charlotte
  with all its fury. The damaging effects of this
  hurricane on our city was severe on both property
  and infrastructure.

• The city streets looked like a war zone, said
  the reporter. She was standing on Elizabeth
  Avenue outside CPCC looking at the aftermath of
  Hurricane Hugo, trying to sum up the destruction
  she was witnessing. The damaging effect of this
  hurricane on our city was severe on both property
  and infrastructure.

Turnabout

• Hurricane Hugo may hit the coastal areas around
  Charleston or Wilmington, but fortunately we are
  safe up here in Charlotte. That was the thinking
  of most people here when this hurricane
  approached the area. However, they were proved
  wrong when Charlotte was hit surprisingly hard.
