Title: The Biblical Blessing of Marriage

1
The Biblical Blessing of Marriage
  • The covenantal coming together as one flesh.
    Gen. 215-24

2
Introduction
  • Our societys view of love is largely fixated
upon the physical or other worldly
    characteristics.
  • We want someone we are physically attracted to
    someone smart, funny, charming, witty.
  • While Christians may look for another Christian
as a starting point the above characteristics are
still a large part in their seeking a
    relationship.
  • Through the above characteristic traits many
    fall in love.

3
Introduction
  • What happens when these same people fall out of
    love?
  • It is at this point that the shallowness of their
relationship brings out the fruit of selfishness.
  • These fruit may appear in the form of a distanced
    relationship to complete separation/divorce.

4
Introduction
  • To have a blessed marriage.
  • There must be a commitment to fulfill your
service to God through the covenant of marriage.
  • This relationship goes beyond the legalities of
covenant and into the heart and soul of
    servant-hood.
  • Ultimately, this relationship must be prepared
for years in advance before it is even considered.

5
Gods attitude surrounding marriage. Gen. 215-24
  • Before marriage mans toil. V. 15
  • As a steward in/of this world, he is accountable
    to God. Gen. 317-19a 42 (2 Thess. 310 1 Tim.
    58)
  • A man among other qualifications would show
himself ready for marriage when he could provide
    for his family.
  • NOTE Many men will get married today, expecting
their wives to support them, which contradicts
    the biblical pattern.

6
Gods attitude surrounding marriage. Gen. 215-24
  • It is not good for man to be alone. V. 18-22
  • In naming all the animals Adam (man) learned
there was not found a helper suitable for him.
    V. 20
  • Adam (man) was incomplete without someone of his
equal to fulfill Gods will to fill the earth and
have dominion over it. V. 21-22
  • God created a woman (not another man) as his
suitable help. Cp. 1 Cor. 119

7
Gods attitude surrounding marriage. Gen. 215-24
  • For this reason a man shall leave his father and
mother and be joined to his wife. V. 223-24
  • He leaves the immediate headship of his father,
though he still honors his father. Cp. Exo.
    2012 (cp. 1 Tim. 53-4, 8 Mk. 710-13)
  • He cleaves (aka one flesh) and is established as
the head of his new family (more said about this
    in the following lesson).

8
Marriage the honorable one flesh
relationship. Heb. 134
  • People who wish to live as married couples, but
without the covenant will be judged.
  • Many today live with one another and are guilty
    of fornication.
  • Others simply give themselves over to one flesh
    encounters, again without the covenant
    relationship.

9
Marriage the honorable one flesh
relationship. Heb. 134
  • Spouses are legally bound to each other for life.
    Rom. 71-3
  • Divorce for any reason other than adultery
(potentially) causes their spouse to commit
adultery along with the one who marries the
    divorced spouse. Matt. 532
  • Many find reasons to justify divorce, but need to
realize God set the covenant relationship for
    life. 1 Cor. 739

10
Conclusion
  • If we are to have a blessed marriage, it must be
    approached by faith.
  • This covenantal relationship is the foundation
    for such a beautiful relationship.
