The Beginning of Immanuel
Lutheran Church

• Was located on Washington and Broad Streets
• Started in 1867
• The first pastor was also the day school teacher

The Second Church

• Was built in 1884
• Was built because of an increase in members
• The church was expanded and a new steeple was
  added
• Located on Second and Spring Streets

The Third Church

• This church was built on the old site in 1913
• This was a larger structure and was distinguished
  with 2 high steeples
• The steeples were visible for many miles

The End of the Third Church

• Following a lightning storm in 1971 the church
  caught fire
• Fortunately the fire doors saved the attached
  school but the church was gutted
• The sturdy brick walls and the church bells
  remained

Todays Immanuel Lutheran Church

• Built in 1972
• Constructed from the remains of the old structure
• Was built with new steeples and renovated
  interior
• Alter cross made out of salvaged ceiling timbers

Interesting Facts

• First pastor spelled Immanuel with an I instead
  of an E
• Taught in German until 1919
• The windows in the entrance of the church were
  salvaged from the old church

• Had a role in establishing the Immanuel hospital
  in 1906
• Also had a role in the creation of Bethany
  college in 1911

Conclusion

• After many years of hardship, Immanuel Lutheran
  church still stands tall.
