Irony
  • Types of irony in Cask
  • Situational---Fortunatos name, costume, a
    carnival takes place on the surface, while a
    murder happens below ground
  • Dramatic--- The wine doesnt exist. Fortunato
    doesnt know that, but we do.
  • Verbal---I drink to your long life.(It wont be
    long at all!!)
  • Yesa mason, I replied. (He pulls out a trowel.
    Hes not of the brotherhood as Fortunato thinks,
    but a bricklayer.)

Purpose of Irony
  • Adds a twist to the storycreates suspense and
    that oh no! feeling. There is a sense of humor
    in the tone, even if its dark humor.

Purpose of Foreshadowing
  • Creates suspense in the reader, as the writer
    drops hints of things to come keeps us
    anticipating, hanging in air, possibly puts us
    in anxiety.
