Title: Dual Enrollment

1
Dual Enrollment
2
What is dual enrollment?
  • Dual Enrollment is a program in which high
schools partner with institutions of higher
education to offer students an opportunity to
earn college credits while still in high school.
  • South Fayette High School applied for and
received funding for the 2007-2008 Dual
Enrollment Grant from the PA Department of
    Education.
  • As a result of this funding South Fayette High
School is offering this opportunity to all 11th
and 12th grade students within the district.

3
Who is eligible for dual enrollment?
  • Dual Enrollment is open to students in 11th and
    12th grade
  • Resident students
  • Private school students
  • Cyber/Charter school students
  • Home schooled students
  • Dual enrollment programs are geared toward any
and all students who have interest in pursuing
post secondary education. In most cases, dual
enrollment is not just for academically gifted
    students.

4
Who is eligible? (contd)
  • Student must have scored at least at the
Proficient level on the PSSA in math, reading,
    and writing.
  • Student must have a high school minimum GPA of
    2.0. or 3.0 (depending on the college/university).
  • Student must take placement exams at the
    respective schools and meet college-readiness
levels if required by the institution of higher
    learning.

5
Who is eligible? (contd)
  • Student must maintain the minimum 2.0 GPA
required for each college course to continue in
    the dual enrollment program.
  • Student must have satisfactory attendance and
citizenship as determined by the high school Code
    of Conduct.

6
How is a dual enrollment program structured?
  • Dual enrollment can take on many appearances.
  • Classes currently offered on the high school
level can be aligned to a partnering schools
curriculum and taught at the high school,
provided the teacher meets the college or
    universitys requirements.
  • Other options include
  • students traveling to the college campus to take
    classes
  • classes can be taken on-line
  • Many schools use a combination of these methods.
In all cases, the school district must have
    written agreements with partnering institutions.

7
Who pays for dual
enrollment programs?
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Education awarded
South Fayette High School the 2007-2008 Dual
Enrollment Grant Funding to be used by the
    district for tuition costs.

8
Does South Fayette currently offer dual
enrollment courses?
  • Yes . South Fayette offers a college-in-high
school Calculus course in partnership with the
University of Pittsburgh where students can earn
Pitt credit for taking the course.
  • South Fayette has Dual Enrollment Agreements with
    the following schools
  • CCAC West Hills Center
  • Carlow University Oakland
  • LaRoche College North Hills
  • Penn State University Beaver Campus
  • Robert Morris University Moon Campus

9
Are credits earned in a dual enrollment program
guaranteed to transfer?
  • Yes and No. While most credits are required to
transfer to state funded and state related
institutions (they may transfer as electives
only), not all credits taken will transfer. It
is incumbent upon the student to find out if
credits taken in a dual enrollment program will
transfer to the institution they plan on
    attending.

138.00 or 192.00 per course depending on family
income (please see Maureen Pedzwater on the
    reimbursement).
  • The reimbursement only applies to the Tuition,
Books and Fees will need to be paid by the
    parents/students.

16
Why would I want my child to do this?
  • Students have an opportunity to grow academically
within a college environment, thus reducing the
level of stress related to the freshman year of
    college.
  • Seniors who have completed most of their high
school requirements can use dual enrollment
    courses to complete their schedule.
  • Juniors and Seniors can take courses in the
evenings, weekends, and summer to get a head
    start on college.

17
Why would I want my child to do this? (contd)
  • Students can evaluate their choices of majors
earlier in their post-secondary career, thus
reducing the number of years or terms for
completion of studies. This is a savings!
  • Students can take up to 6 credits per semester as
long as they meet all requirements.

18
Days and Times ETC.
  • Course schedules for each of the institutions
listed will be available for students and parents
to review beginning November 9, 2007.
