Title: Authoritarian leadership

1
Authoritarian leadership
  • A leadership in which the leader retains a great
    deal of authority

2
Democratic Leadership
  • A leadership style in which the leader allows
subordinates to participate in decision making
    and problem solving.

3
Laissez-faire leadership
  • A leadership style in which the leader is
    uninvolved and lets subordinates direct
    themselves.

4
DEGREE OF AUTHORITY RETAINED
  • One way to describe leadership styles is in terms
of how much authority the leader retains. Do
employees get to make choices and control their
own work? Or does the supervisor make all the
    decisions?

5
AUTHORITARIAN LEADERSHIP
  • The leader retains a great deal of authority,
making decisions and dictating instructions to
employees. An example of this would be a military
    commander who expects unquestioning obedience.

6
Democratic leadership
  • Some supervisors share more authority than
    authoritarian supervisors. In the democratic
style of leadership, the supervisor allows
employees to participate in decision making and
problem solving. A supervisor with a democratic
style of leadership might have the staff meet
weekly to discuss how to improve business
relations. When a conflict arises, the supervisor
asks the group to discuss possible solutions and
    to select one.

7
Laissez-faire leadership
  • The opposite extreme from authoritarian
leadership. A laissez-faire manager is uninvolved
and lets employees do what they want. Supervisors
are rarely, if ever, able to practice this style
of leadership because the nature of the
supervisors job requires close involvement with
    the employees.

8
Contingency theories of leadership
  • With these possibilities, is there one best
approach to leading employees? A common view is
that the best style of leadership depends on the
    circumstances.
