When and Why was it passed?

• Approved March 2, 1901
• The Platt Amendment was passed so that the U.S.
  could keep some kind of control over Cuba.

The Conditions of the Platt Amendment

• Cuba could not make any treaty with another
  nation that would weaken its independence or
  allow another foreign power to gain territory in
  Cuba.
• Cuba had to allow the United States to buy or
  lease naval stations in Cuba.
• Cubas debts had to be kept low to prevent
  foreign countries from landing troops to enforce
  payment.
• The United States would have the right to
  intervene to protect Cuban independence and keep
  order.

Facts

• At first the Cubans didnt want to accept the
  Amendment but then they realized as long as they
  rejected it the U.S. would maintain its military
  government of the island.
• The Platt Amendment governed relations between
  the U.S. and Cuba until its repeal in 1934.
• Cuba was effectively made an American
  protectorate.
