3Mission
- To assist establishing the highest standard
for academic education in the country of Angola,
by promoting collaboration between international
and Angolan institutions, and by encouraging the
involvement of the private sector in the
rebuilding of Angolan society

- Founded in Boston in May, 1996, by Michael
Kennedy, the late Chairman of Citizens Energy - Operates as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt not-for-profit
organization - Directors Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II (Chairman)

Mr. James Hayward - Works in support of the Catholic University of
Angola - Carries out educational activities and training
programs in the country of Angola. - Serves as point of reference for commercial and
non-governmental organizations in Angola and
abroad.
5Contributors
- Citizens Energy, Mobil, Energy Africa (formerly
Engen, South Africa), and SAGA (Norway), are the
original contributors to the AEAF, with initial
donations in excess of 1.6 million USD in 1996 - Citizens Energys continued its support with
annual grants in excess of 100,000 in 1997 and
1998 - In 1997, Energy Africa sponsored an 80,000
program to carry out ESL Classes in Luanda - At the beginning of 1998, private donations for
over 10,000 were made to the AEAF in memory of
Michael Kennedy

- Collaboration with the Catholic University
- Inauguration of the Michael LeM. Kennedy Library
- Information Technology acquisition at the
Catholic University - Refurbishing of the Colegio S. Josè de Cluny

8Catholic University of Angola
- It is an open university, with admission criteria
based solely on merit - Its purpose is to serve Angola and its people
- Its presence will create a new alternative,
therefore encouraging higher standards of
academic education in Angola - Starting of the preparation classes scheduled for
February 1999 - Law and Economics will be the faculties initially
established
9The Michael Kennedy Library
- Asked for help by Cardinal do Nascimento, Michael
was a crucial factor in starting the project - The Conference of the Bishops of Angola
unanimously decided to dedicate the future
library of the Catholic University to his memory - The library will be the core of the learning
methodology at the CUA and is an important
recognition of Michaels commitment and
contribution to the project
10Information Technology Project
- The goal is to equip the CUA with the highest
possible standard of IT Technology HW, SW,
Internet, Administration, Linguistic Laboratory,
etc. - Assessment study by an international advisory
board appointed by the AEAF will help set
guidelines - Consultants will be based in Luanda to provide a
seamless knowledge transfer - Link the project to the Leland Initiative of the
US Agency for International Development
11The Colegio S. Josè de Cluny
- AEAF accepted a grant request from the Catholic
University of Angola for refurbishing works at
the Colegio S. Josè de Cluny - Works began in September 1997 after a 268,000
down payment to the construction company - Refurbishing has been completed in May 1998

13Courses of English
- English as a second language courses
- Two cycles have been carried out in Luanda
successfully in 1997 - The financing was made possible by a PSA
obligation of Energy Africa - New approach organize such programs in Angola to
lower costs and reach out to a much higher number
of students - Offers an example for collaboration between the
private sector and non-governmental organizations
14Future Development
- Work with the private sector to stimulate its
involvement and offer a way to engage in socially
responsible projects - Encourage the collaboration between the Angolan
Government, private sector, NGOs and
international academic institutions - Implement additional educational activities
(English and Computer training programs, etc.) - Create awareness and encourage commitment to
higher standards of academic education and
professional training in Angola
