  their cultural needs
• With refugees and asylum seekers requiring
  services for children this is an important tool
  in developing culturally sensitive working
• Service users should be acknowledged as the
  experts in their own lives

Using a Culturagram

• This is a tool specifically to be used where
  there is a need to focus on understanding
  cultural issues
• It enables discussion on areas that can be very
  sensitive
• It can be used in conjunction with other
  assessment tools I.As C.As, CP

• Length of time in the community
• Legal or undocumented status
• Age at time of immigration
• Language spoken at home and in the community

• Values held about family, education and work

In groups of 4two pair work together initially

• Consider the ten factors set out and draw up your
  own Culturagram 10 minutes each way
• Use the factors flexibly you may not have moved
  countries but maybe towns or cities
• Health beliefs maybe about family patterns of
  health or maybe behaviour
• Feedback on key points and issues raised using
  this type of tool to the larger group of 4
• Whole group feedback

• Constructing a culturagram requires skilled
  communication
• Clear explanations about why a tool of this
  nature will be useful to the service user
• Use great sensitivity as this could raise painful
  and distressing memories
• Be prepared about how you will respond
