- The Municipality of Bologna set up a public
wireless access point at the Iperbole Service
Front Office to experiment the Wi-Fi technology
and offer an innovative Internet access to the
users. - The service is provided for free to the end
users and guarantees the simultaneous coverage of
almost 30 laptops into a range of about 150
metres nearby the Iperbole-Internet Service Front
Office, located in Palazzo dAccursio City Hall.

- Broadband free access for tourists and visitors
at the Iperbole/URP, Central Front Office at the
City Hall of the Municipality of Bologna - Supports IEEE 802.11b/g, up to 54 Mbps.

service - Since January 06 60 users x day, 8.141 total
users registered to the service

- Starting from June 2006 the Municipality of
Bologna has implemented a Wi-Fi Mesh Network
covering part of the historical city centre - The service is free of charge for the end users
- It guarantees a 7/24 coverage of almost 220
mobile positions in an area of the old city center

- Supports IEEE 802.11b/g (Wi-Fi) standard devices
- Maximum band available is 256 Kb/s
- Users are able to access Wi-Fi within the
covered zone. They can also roam freely between
one node of the network to another, still
remaining connected. - The purchase and configuration of the technical
stuff necessary for access to the service is in
charge of the user. - In accordance with the public aims of the
service, the system includes filters for contents
and images opposed to the project philosophy

- Iperbole Civic Network users (Iperboliani).
They can take part in the Iperbole Wireless
experimentation with the same access codes as for
the Iperbole services - Residents in Bologna, not yet subscribed to the
Iperbole Free Civic Network - Students and administrative staff of the
University of Bologna
13Goals of the experimental phase
- To supply a city network wireless solution with
high capacity, reliability, low cost and
user/client based - To test the reliability of the network
- To set up and test sustainability models
(business models) that will focus on
technological solutions, specific contents,
possible partnerships, cofinancing channels,
sponsors, etc.

- The wireless coverage of the historic centre also
includes - - The Sala Borsa Library
- One of the biggest and newest libraries of
Bologna. It is located in the City Hall complex.
In addition to the various books sections, it
includes a large multimedial area - The Archiginnasio Library
- A famous historical library. It houses precious
incunabula and many original sixteenth-century
editions

- The Guglielmo Marconi Foundation (FGM) has the
main goal to promote and foster research
activities related to radio-communications and
initiatives aiming at perpetuate the memory and
knowledge of Marconis work
- FGM created a "hot spot" access, whose range
extends both inside and outside the Foundation
building, in order to allow visitors to use the
Internet and to receive any kind of information
about the FGM Museum

temporary password which will enable them to
enter the service for a limited amount of time

- On September 2008 most of the offices of the
Bologna Municipality moved in a new building,
right outside the Historical City Centre of town - The Iperbole Wireless connection can be used by
all people standing in the waiting rooms and

according to agreed principles - A workgroup consisting of technicians, graphic
designers and editors from the staffs of both
institutions has been implemented
