8Background
- The old problems surplus places small sixth
forms insularity survival of the fittest - Another problem ELWa v LEA funding
implications - 5th June 2003 a pledge
- 16th June 2003 a starting point
9First Steps
- Acknowledgement of Stakeholders (formerly
competitors) - Four schools Bedwas St Cenydd St Ilans St
Martins - The LEA
- Commitment to partnership
- Agreed principles
10Principles
- Collaboration not competition
- Openness, honesty and trust
- The imperative to synchronise
- 14-19 dimension also crucial
- Development of a shared identity
11Barriers to Collaboration
- 4 schools 4 different school days
- 2 different timetable cycles (3 vs 1)
- Logistics
- Different school cultures
- Money
- Lack of will to change
12Joint Problems or Solutions?
- Timetables
- Assessment, Reporting and Exam practices
- Closure days
- Registration of pupils EMA
- Uniform (or not!)
- Paying for books, photocopying
- Staff Expectations about work and behaviour
- Responsibility for pupil progress - Inspections
13However
- All 4 schools agreed a common school day (and did
the necessary statutory consultation) - All 4 schools now have a common timetable cycle
(so much suddenly becomes possible) - All 4 schools now meet regularly to plan and
monitor joint provision - Staff support and goodwill
- Some collaborative work is already in place
14Benefits
- Shared staff resources
- Less duplication
- Specialist sites one cost for resourcing
- Wider range of subjects on offer

15The Mighty Shift
- Student attitude change
- Student working patterns
- Student learning styles and practices
- Staff attitudes changes
- Flexibility of teaching style and practices
- Transparency of schemes of work
- Organisation of learning materials
16Challenges
- There is a need for staff awareness training and
attitude change management - Logistical issues are often not within our
control - The timescale for implementation is never long
enough - Technology NEVER works when you need it!
17The Biggest Challenges
- Some staff dont like to share!
- Or give anything up!
- Or change anything they are doing
- They find it hard to accept that, even though
its broken, it needs fixing!
18The Future
- An increasingly federal approach for 14-19
education in the Caerphilly basin? (shared
issues shared objectives) - Delivering the Learning Country Agenda
- Greater community use of community resources
- More links with business
- The School(s) of the Future
