MISSION AND GOALS
MISSION STATEMENT
Preservation of natural and cultural heritage in
coastal areas requires a holistic
interdisciplinary approach able to provide
prevention of, and responses to, natural and
human hazards with innovative methods, tools and
measures which can foster both sustainable
development and biocultural conservation.
  • The Natural and Cultural Heritage in Coastal
Zones Course will embrace this concept,
presenting a novel approach to the analysis,
    mapping, evaluation, planning, management and
policy of world coastlines with the view to
preserving their natural and cultural values,
    including their landscapes, beauty, ecosystems
    and services.
  • This intensive course will allow working with a
wide spectrum of disciplines and experts who will
    provide new insights into
  • methods for the analysis of natural and cultural
    coastal heritage
  • evaluation of biocultural diversity and
    conservation in coastal zones
  • mapping natural and cultural coastal values in a
    common GIS environment
  • participatory landscape and seascape planning and
    policy
  • integrated coastal zone management for
    biocultural diversity and conservation
  • preventive responses to risks to coastal heritage
    on land and sea
  • intervention priorities in dealing with natural
hazards, climate change and human impact on the
    coast
  • tools for achieving sustainable coastal
    development while conserving biocultural diversity

COURSE BACKGROUND AND GOALS
The Natural and Cultural Heritage in Coastal
Zones Course aims to offer a holistic and
interdisciplinary approach for responses to, and
prevention of, the natural and human hazards
along the coasts, especially those with sensitive
environments, where natural and cultural values
form a complex palimpsest.
Case studies will be employed to better
illustrate the topic from the Pacific to the
Atlantic and the Mediterranean. In the latter
over thousands of years human communities,
sustained by a combination of unique ecosystems,
have coexisted and produced some of the worlds
most fascinating civilisations which flourished
thanks to a unique environment made up of
biodiversity richness, climatic conditions and
landscape beauty. For instance the
Mediterranean, this unparalleled cradle of
civilisation, is today seriously at risk due to
the 400 million tons of oil being transported
through it each year. The course accordingly aims
to tackle the topic of oil-spill risk to
coastlines, and to outline the importance of
mapping coastal natural and cultural values in a
combined GIS environment, thus furnishing
fundamental tools for risk response useful in
preserving unique examples of world
heritage. The material produced during the
course will lead to a scientific publication to
which lecturers and students will be invited to
contribute.
COURSE OUTPUTS
  • Novel approaches to the analysis, mapping,
evaluation, planning, management and policy of
world coastlines considering both natural and
    cultural heritage
  • tools for participatory planning and integrated
    management of coastal areas
  • measures for sustainable development while
    conserving biocultural diversity
  • training of scientists, technologists,
    environmental planners, coastal managers and
policy makers in advanced tools in the fields of
decision support systems, mapping and GIS
  • feedback on specific case studies elaborated by
    participants
  • constitution of a scientific and technical forum
of discussion on integrated coastal zone know-how
and implementation by bridging nature and culture
  • material for a scientific publication
  • course certificate
