1

Globalisation
  • 1)processes and relations (social, economic,
    political, cultural etc) that are
  • 2)transcending national borders, that
  • 3)link distant places and peoples and that
  • 4)are spontaneous rather than the result of
    political decisions.
  • A Global Village is it just?

2

  • .(page 37)

3

Rawls critique of a Theory of Global Justice C1
each society has the potential of its own to
realise justice C2 one should not assume that
liberal notions of human nature and of
distributive justice are acceptable to every
people in the world C3 global inequality is not
caused by unequal natural resources but by
differences in political culture. C4 no target
or cutoff point
4

Questionable assumptions
  • Poverty in the Third world is not related to
involuntary economic and political dependence on
the part of the poorer nations
  • Rawls assumes that a people can be considered as
    a unit
  • Rawls assumes that poverty is not the result of a
lack of natural resources or of traditions or
cultures that now living peoples have not chosen
  • The duty of assistance do not question the global
    structure

5
Theory of Global Justice
  • Global Rectificatory Justice (GRJ)
  • Global Distributive Justice (GDJ)

6

Constraints to the application of GRJ
  • time-related restrictions
  • its application depends on whether the colonial
or imperial power still gain and the subject of
colonialism and imperialism still suffer from
    former injustices.
  • Who is today responsible?
  • Rectification or reconciliation?

7
Global Distributive justice
  • A Rawlsian (but not Rawls) theory of GDJ
  • The hypothetical device of a social contract is
then transferred from a nation to the world as a
whole. Representatives of the worlds population
deliberate on the appropriate principles of
justice behind a veil of ignorance
  • Cosmopolitan
