OF DESIGN IN THE NETHERLANDS"
Maarten Hajer (1962) has held the Chair in
Public Policy at the Department ofPolitical
Science at the University of Amsterdam since 1998
and has been theHead of the Department since
2003. His research interests currently include
new practices of democratic governance,environmen
tal politics, urban politics. Currently he is
working ontransnational policy-discourse
formations in several research projects on
thedomain of food safety in Europe the role of
experts in policy making, whichmaterialised in
several major projects on the role of designers
(architects,urban planners, urban designers,
landscape architects) in regional
planning.Theoretically he seeks to develop new
methods of an interpretive public
policyanalysis. He is preparing two new books,
one on The Politics of Design, and oneon
'Politics as Performance' in which he seeks to
combine his previous work ondiscourse with two
new dimensions of politics dramaturgy and
deliberation. He studied Political Science and
Urban Regional Planning at the University
ofAmsterdam. He obtained a D.Phil. in Politics
at the University of Oxford. Hewas
Assistant-Professor and Associate Professor at
the Institute of Sociology,Ludwig-Maximilian-Univ
ersität, Munich, Germany (1993 - 1996). After
that heworked as Senior Researcher at the
Wetenschappelijke Raad voor hetRegeringsbeleid
(WRR), The Hague, Netherlands (1996 - 1998).
