1
State of Michigan Web 2.0 Standards Update
CMA User Group Meeting April 15, 2009 Michelle
Stiffler eMichigan Web Development
2
Current SOM social media sites
  • Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn,
    etc.,
  • Used to post events, jobs, news, videos, podcasts
  • Post non-SOM articles
  • Promote a Cause (example CTF)
  • Citizen input and stories

3
Why do we need standards?
  • Users need to know they are viewing an official
    SOM page
  • Consistency, extending Michigan.gov brand
  • Maintain professional appearance on the Web
  • Protect image of state employees
  • Reduce occurrence of offensive comments, images,
    or advertising
  • Ensure only SOM content is posted to SOM pages
  • Include contact information and links back to
    Michigan.gov sites

4
Examples of need for standards
  • Profile image attire not professional
  • Link to profile image of employee in bikini
  • Groups using MDOT in name, not official pages
  • Member photo shows MSU student chugging beer
  • Advertising in context (not Facebook ad)
  • Inappropriate comments by employees
  • Linking to LSJ.com (gasp!)
  • Overuse of tinyurl.com

5
Standard image for Facebook
  • Currently in development, but not a major
    enhancement
  • Profile image is 200 px wide
  • Cause page image is 240 px wide
  • A simple Michigan.gov branding will be applied to
    profile images
  • Example of possible standard image

7
Where we are now
  • Working with MDIT OES to integrate Web 2.0 into
    the AUP
  • Close to approving standard Michigan.gov branding
    for profile images
  • Preparing social media Best Practices to be
included in the State of Michigan Look and Feel
    Standards for e-Government Applications document
