PROMESS 1 Access to Large Infrastructures
Promess 1 PROfiles across Mediterranean
Sedimentary Systems. Part 1.
Objectives Within the Ocean Margin Cluster
(OMARC) and in close co-operation with the
Euro-US Eurostrataform project, the objective
of Promess is to obtain comprehensive transects
across two Mediterranean Deltaic Margins, in the
Gulf of Lions and in the Adriatic, where seismic
data base are good and preservation of
depositional sequences exceptional. Promess 1
will use a geotechnical vessel for sampling long
sections (50-300 m) and realise in situ
measurements and downhole logging of shelf and
upper slope sedimentary environments (50-300 m
water depth). It will provide clues on . High
resolution sequence stratigraphy on deltaic
margins . Processes of formation of strata and
architecture of sediment bodies from source to
sink . Slope stability . Rapid climate changes
In order to process the ca. 700 m of coring and
logging data, the project has been organized in
8 work-packages. To the great difference of IODP,
most of the work will have to be done onshore,
which implies a strong networking of European and
North American laboratories.

Results During Year 1 of the project, assessment
of all geophysical data was carried out and
drilling sites were selected. For each of the 4
sites, data bases were established using a
Geographic Information System, and a detailed
report was prepared synthesizing all information.
In parallel, a call for tender specifying all
requirements of the project was published in the
Official Journal of the EC in April 2003. In June
2003, the interim Pollution Prevention and Safety
Panel of IODP (iPPSP) provided a courtesy review
for the Promess drilling sites. It recommended
some additional seismic processing for better
identification of gas anomalies. This was
accomplished in July, 2003. In November 2003,
following the detailed evaluation of the
proposals submitted to Promess 1, Fugro Engineers
B.V. was proposed as main sub-contractor for
drilling and testing operation at sea. This was
accepted by the EC on December 1st, 2003. The
expected period for drilling operations is
comprised between April and June, 2004, with SRV
Bavenit operated by Fugro.

Relevance for society ? Promess will allow to
better understand the effects of global and
climate changes, sedimentary and oceanographic
processes and tectonics on continental margins
shaping. ? Promess will give access to a large
and complementary data set that will allow
further development for geophysical and
geotechnical instrumentation. ? Promess will
enable us to understand formation of sand bodies
that can be of industrial interest for oil
exploration or marine aggregates.
Promess future events ? Next Milestone Promess
cruise is to take place on Fugross Bavenit
drilling ship before mid-2004 ? Forthcoming
