Buildings
  • Most buildings were churches or cathedrals
  • Some castles were built, but were far outnumbered
    by churches
  • Other buildings built in the middle ages include
    palaces, universities, town halls, guild halls,
    and occasionally private homes

Romanesque Style
  • First style of architecture after Roman empire
    collapsed
  • Combined Byzantine and Western Roman buildings
  • Started around the year 500
  • Had thick walls and large towers
  • Had many arches in the buildings that were
    semicircular rather than pointed
  • Roofs were arched and semicircular and called
    Barrel or Tunnel vaults

  • Had many towers, wider windows, pointed arches,
