  • In this activity, Ss are encouraged to
    think of as many words as possible to
    describe the universities on the pictures. (class
    work)

Guiding Qs may be            Q1 Can
you recognize these famous universities?
          Q2 How will you describe them in your
own words?           Q3 Do you like these
universities?           Q4 Which one is your
ideal university?
Goal To lead up to the topic, get Ss to warm up
and arouse their interests in the topic. And it
is important to activate students existing
background knowledge.

Activity 2 Free talk (5mins)
  • In this activity, Ss are invited to talk
    about their ideal university or their own
    university. (pair work)

Step 2. Reading (30 mins)
Activity1. Pre-reading (5 mins)
  • Predicting In this activity, Ss are
    required to look at the title of the passage and
    predict what they will read. (Class work)

Ss may think about the likely contents
the writer the type of writing the style

Goal To develop Ss reading skill predicting
and preview the features of a diary.

Activity 2 Skimming and Scanning (10mins)
  • Ss will be divided in to 6 groups according
    to the dates of the diary. Each group takes
    charge of one day. A spokesman or spokeswoman
    will be chosen from each group. (In different
    activity, spokesman could be different.)

  • Each group has 5 minutes to read the
    content. They will be given another 5 minutes to
    exchange their understanding of the part with
    their group members and work together to fill in
    the following form.

Goal To develop Ss reading skill skimming and
scanning, that is, how can we get the general
idea of a passage as quickly as possible and how
to find out the clues of a story .

Activity 3 Oral Report (5mins)
  • In this activity, the spokesman of each
    group will report their summary to the whole
    class in turns. (individual work)

Goal To overcome Ss shyness and stimulate Ss to
speak English in public.

Interpreting (10mins)
  • Ss are required to answer the questions of
    exercise 7 on page 5 in order to appreciate the
    writers style of humor through exaggeration.
    (class work)

Goal  To help Ss appreciate the writing style of
the writer and understand the passage exactly.

Step 3 Presentation (40 minutes)
  • Ss are encouraged to talk about their own
    experience of the first week in college. Each
    group would be assigned a topic according to the
    main idea of each part in the passage.

Goal This activity is intended to help Ss
improve their team spirit and creativity, and
strengthen their confidence in expressing
themselves in a foreign language.

  • Each group should prepare a presentation.
    They would be encouraged to act out their topic
    in the form of individual presentation, interview
    or role play.

Note to encourage Ss to work together
responsibly to finish the task in limited time
and learn from the experience.
Each group will have 7-8 mins to
prepare, and 5 mins to present.
At the end of the presentation, Ss will
spend 2 minutes to review the passage and compare
their own experience with the writers.

  • Step 4. Assignment (5 minutes)

Task 1 Writing Write a short essay about the
biggest trouble you come across on campus now,
and try to write down some solutions. No less
than 120 words.
Task 2 Reflection What do you expect to learn in
the university?
