Microsoft Exchange Server

• Software used to create a mail server within an
  organization.
• Has to be run on Microsoft operating systems
• Windows Server 2000 or Windows Server 2003
• However, the clients that send and receive the
  mail messages can run on Windows XP, Windows ME,
  Windows 98, and many others.
• Allows employees to send Emails and other forms
  of electronic communication with one another
  through the use of software such as Microsoft
  Outlook.
• Normally included with the Windows operating
  system.

Novell GroupWise

• Novell is communications software that allows for
  the exchange of emails between the employees of
  an organization.
• GroupWise requires the installation of an
  agent, basically the equivalent of the
  Microsoft Exchange Server, also it requires the
  installation of clients, the equivalent of
  Microsoft Outlook.

How Groupware Will Be Used in QC T and in PetPRO

• Groupware facilitates communication between
  employees of a department and a firm.
• The employees of Quality Control Testing would
  easily be able to transfer files and test results
  to one another
• Inter-Functional Area Group communication would
  be significantly improved. Other departments can
  easily send news of recalls, tardiness, meetings,
  etc. to others within PetPRO.

• Groupware is an aid that helps employees share
  data and information
• This can work for both Quality Control and
  Testing and for the greater PetPRO.

How They Measure Up
Financial Requirements

• The difference in total costs 50,000.
• Comes from the 5 year support and service.
• Microsoft offers only a 2 year support
• Cost seen for Microsofts support is an
  estimation of the 5 year service if it were to
  exist (15,750), based on 2 year cost of 6,300.
  
• Microsofts support is mostly software upgrades,
  whereas Novells support is not limited to
  upgrades.
• Added cost is due to added features in the
  support.

Our Decision Process

• Microsoft Exchange Server
• Will require upgrading RAM from 128mb to 256mb
• No documentation for developing SAP.
• Integration process will have to be developed
  independently
• Extensive help available for any problems that
  may arise with the installation, implementation
  or use of the program throughout the lifetime of
  the software
• within the software, from the manufacturers
  website, as well as from many online communities
  on the web offer free support
• In business for nearly 20 years so there is
  little to no risk

• Novell GroupWise
• No required hardware upgrades
• Integration into the SAP program can be done by
  Novell or by our own IT department
• Help is somewhat limited
• In business for since 1981, and GroupWise is
  nearly as old.

Our Recommendation

• Novell GroupWise!

• Although Novells initial cost is more expensive,
  there is an abundant about of information that
  discusses integration into the SAP system, which
  in the long run will save us time, and
  implementation costs
• For example, Microsoft Exchange offers no SAP
  integration information. We would have to hire an
  outside source to implement it, or have our IT
  department develop their own methods for
  implementation, which can be costly and timely.

• Wealth of information about Microsoft product
  available for free online made us question the
  whether this product was user-friendly, or
  confusing and difficult to configure.

• Alternative Lotus Notes!

Critique of the Template

• What worked for us
• Very thorough (included a lot of detail, and
  leaves little up for debate).
• Colour Coated.
• What didn't work for us
• The Rated Requirements section wasnt weighted by
  level of importance, so drawing a conclusion and
  comparing based on 0-3 ranking was less useful.

• How we would change it if we could
• A more in-depth look at pricing and pricing
  structures - Different Editions Microsoft
  Exchange Standard Edition, and Enterprise Edition
  (each priced differently).
