Format of the session

• The session consisted of presentations from a
  number Standards Development Organisations on
  their NGN standardisation activities followed by
  a panel discussion on standardisation issues
  raised during the workshop

Issues highlighted in the presentations and
discussions (1)

• Issues raises during the SDO presentations
  included the following-
• There is danger of architectural confusion, need
  for generic architectural view, reference
  architectures
• Need for harmony between E164 and IPv6
• Architectural issues for NGN include addressing
  and routing, QoS, security, charging, business
  modelling and service scenarios
• More work is required on interworking situations
  including carrier/home network interworking

• Use existing protocols where available, dont
  invent new ones unnecessarily
• Do we have a business model for NGN? We do not
  have one for the Internet so how do we show that
  basing NGN on the Internet is a good business
  case?
• Most likely evolution to NGN is from current
  telco networks
• Voice is the common factor between existing
  networks and the NGN
• End-to-end connectivity across NGNs is a priority

Observations and conclusions

• The presentations demonstrated the wide interest
  among the Standards Development Organisations on
  the NGN concepts and of the many issues that need
  to be resolved
• There is a need therefore to ensure that the
  ITU-T NGN studies take account of these in order
  to avoid duplication of work
• There are many different views of what NGNs will
  be and how they will be realised
• Architecture studies should therefore be
  accelerated in order to help to identify and
  scope the standards required and should include
  business modelling and evolution scenarios
