Istanbul's Nightcomers - Dazibao
A project of Istanbul Foundation for Culture and
Arts (IKSV) Co-funded by the European Commission
(EC)
Background
Dazibao - wall-mounted posters written in
big-characters - was a highly efficient way to
publicly express opinions during the Chinese
Cultural Revolution. Today's Dazibao - electronic
and video image is the most popular way of
communication and expression, especially among
young people. Through a nocturnal outdoor video
exhibition, Istanbul Foundation for Culture and
Arts (IKSV) aimed at exposing Europe's
multicultural identities and experiences of
bridging Turkey and EU.
The Project
Culture in Action Electronic Image Dazibao.
Commencing 16 August 2007 and lasting 12 months.
Total estimated cost is EUR 179,512, of which 50
per cent is being funded by the EC.
Location
Video-exhibition and symposia in Turkey
(Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Mersin, Antakya,
Diyarbakir), Slovenia (Ljubljana) and Surrey (UK)
What does the project involve?

• An open call for short video works focusing on
  the dialogue between Turkish and European
  cultures and on new forms of communication
  through electronic images
• A media campaign to promote the Electronic Image
  Dazibao project
• A series of symposia bringing Turkish and EU
  experts in the visual arts together with youth,
  universities, professional organisations and
  media
• More than hundred outdoor video screening
  organised in Istanbul, Izmir, Mersin and Antakya.
  The selected works will be presented also in
  Ankara and Diyarbakir as well as in the UK and in
  Slovenia by the partner organisations Farnham
  Maltings and Moderna Galerija.
