FreeBSD History

• BSD developed at University of California,
  Berkeley, as alterations to ATT Unix
• Initial implementation of key Unix concepts, such
  as sockets, virtual memory, and TCP/IP
• 386BSD developed to implement BSD Unix on x86
  architecture in early 1990s
• FreeBSD developed from 386BSD project (as did
  NetBSD)
• Now has 350 active developers, and 1,000's of
  contributors

• FreeBSD is a multi-user system. Several people

• There can be a lot of different programs that can
  run on a single computer.
• Adding a additional processors gave FreeBSD
  better performances.

• Real time processing does not currently exist
  with FreeBSD
• The FreeBSD community is talking about creating a
  real time extension for the OS

• No true device management console
• Plans for inclusion of such a console in v6.0
  were scrapped

Device Drivers

• The open source nature of FreeBSD allows for easy
  driver programming
• Unfortunately, device manufacturers are reluctant
  to create drivers for non-Windows OS platforms
• Native drivers are released by FreeBSD community
  programmers months after a devices manufacture

Security cost

• FreeBSD offers the best of Windows and Linux
• Open source coding allows for third party
  auditing
• However, FreeBSD is not able to be altered like
  Linux
• This prevents inexperienced programmers from
  creating security holes

• FreeBSD is used by some of the largest banks in
  the world to process over 1.5 trillion US Dollars
  of business to business transactions per year.
• Jails use FreeBSD for system security.
