Title: Native American Removal

1
Native American Removal
2
President Jacksons Native American Policy
  • National policy to remove Native Americans from
    the East by force.
  • Indian Removal Act.

3
President Jacksons Native American Policy
  • Trail of Tears

4
Where did the Native Americans go?

5
Problem solved?
  • Andrew Jackson thought he solved the Native
    American problem for good.
  • But did he?

6
Primary Sources
  • Today we will be analyzing primary sources from
both Native Americans and White men.
  • What is a Primary Source?

7
Indian Commissioner Thomas L. McKenney Explains
Removal, 1828.
  • I forbear also to remark, except briefly, upon
measures of general policy in regard to our
IndiansI refer especially to those whose
territory is embraced by the limits of States.
Every feeling of sympathy for their lot should be
kept alive, and no measures that could compromise
the humanity and justice of the nationbut the
question occurs-What are humanity and justice in
reference to this unfortunate race? They live
within districts of country already surrounded
and pressed upon by a population whose anxiety
and efforts to get rid of them are not less
restless and persevering, than its that law of
nature immutable, under such circumstances, if
continued in they must perish? Or does it rather
consist in withdrawing them from this certain
destruction, and placing them, though even at
this late hour, in a situation where, by the
adoption of a suitable system for their security,
preservation and improvement they may be saved?

8
Your Task
  • In groups you will be analyzing a primary
document and answering questions on the document.
  • You will then be placed in new groups and share
    about your document.
  • Then each group will present their document to
    the entire class.
  • These documents will be important for a later
    assignment

9
What happened next?
Assimilation process in which one group takes
on the cultural and other traits of a larger
group.
