30 Years Later

Navajo Long Walk - 1864
  • Navajos were forced to walk at gunpoint from
    their reservation in Arizona to eastern New
    Mexico.
  • Trip lasted 18 days
  • Over 200 Navajos died on the 450 mile long walk.
  • The Navajo tribe had lived on their land in
    Arizona since the 16th Century.

The Long Walk Home
  • On June 18, 1868 the US government allowed the
    Navajo to return to their former ancestral home.
  • The return journey to Arizona was called the
    Long Walk" home.
  • This is one of the few instances where the US
    government relocated a tribe to their traditional
    boundaries.
