Goals Of The Lesson
  • Students will learn who attended Kansas schools
    in the early 19th century, where they were
    located, and when and how long students went to
    these schools.
  • Students will learn how and why these schools
    changed over time.

  • Made of the materials that were available,
    plentiful, and inexpensive
  • Wooded areas cut logs or green sawn lumber
  • Eastern and Middle Prairies boards sawn from
    local trees or shipped in from the east
  • Western Prairie - Sod

First Last One-Room Schools In Kansas
  • 1820s Small number of schools for Indian
    children on Indian missions
  • 1844 Wyandotte Tribe organized school for their
    children (White children were allowed to attend)
  • 1990 Dermot School closed. Was in operation
    from 1953 to 1990 (Teacher retired).

  • Based on the two previous pictures, compare and
    contrast attending school today and attending
    school in the 19th and late 20th centuries.
  • Students write results in a Venn Diagram.

    on a farm in a rural area. What tasks involving
    Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic would have to be
    able to do in order to survive? Write down as
    many as you can think of.
