3Contact Before Work
- What Is It?Contact before work is the
transition from the activities associated with
getting to class to starting the actual class
work for the day - What Do You Do?Typically you quietly discuss
with your colleagues what was on your mind as you
came to class or was of particular interest to
you that you want to share

28MEEG 101 Environment
- The Learning Environment
- active ( as opposed to passive )
- team-based
- workshop facilitators ( not lecturers )
- requires everyone (including the instructors) to
change
29In The Classroom
- Active learning, teams, continuous improvement,
and constructivist problems are used thus, you
can expect
- to participate in small group discussions and
make presentations to the class
- to be team leader, member, and recorder
- to help other students learn
- to make suggestions for improvement
- that some classroom instructions may be unclear
30Focus on Facilitator Signal
- The facilitator needs your attention
- Raise your hands to inform your neighbors
- Finish your sentence
- Do NOT finish your paragraph
- Turn toward the Facilitator
31Change
- Every aspect of this class requires a change in
the way you think and react!
- Change affects everyone differently
- Students who actively participate in the
classroom activities will become productive
learners
- These students will also develop the skills and
abilities that employers are looking for in
todays changing workplace
32Professional Behavior
- Academic Integrity Issues
- referring to materials or employing devices not
authorized by the instructors
- depending on the aid of others to the extent that
the work is not your own
- providing inappropriate aid to another person
- plagiarism
- allowing someone to plagiarize your own work
- See UD Code of Conduct
33Professional Behavior
- Engineers are expected to effectively communicate
their ideas
- Offensive or inappropriate language (written and
oral) does not effectively communicate the
desired ideas to the audience
- Inappropriate language not only includes words
that are biased or slanted (racially, sexually,
ethnically....) but can also include informal
(slang) words - Work that is full of grammatical or spelling
errors also does not effectively communicate ideas
34Professional Behavior
- In this course, you are expected to conduct
yourselves in a manner that is considered
professional and ethical, which includes
- written communications (assignments)
- oral communications (presentations, conversations
with peers, instructors, TAs)
- electronic communications (forums, email)
35Professional Behavior
- In MEEG 101 you are expected to
- come to each class
- be on time for each class
- work on class assignments (not work for other
classes)
- stay awake
- avoid disruptive side conversations
- Some amount of inappropriate behavior is
tolerated, but repeated occurrences will result
in a reduction of your grade

37Course Grading
- Earn Letter Grade in each Session
- Lab, Concepts, Modeling
- Average of 3 for Course Grade
- EXCEPT, Final Course Grade can be no higher than
1 letter above lowest
- So AABA, but AACB, and AADC
38Session Grading/Assessment
- You must first MEET Expectations before you
can EXCEED Expectations
- The faculty is responsible for defining
expectations (i.e., what is required to MEET
customer expectations)
- Students are responsible for determining what is
required to EXCEED customer expectations!
- Work can be resubmitted ONCE to MEET (but NOT
EXCEED !! ) Expectations
39Grading Flow Chart
40Session Grading
41Typical Concepts Session
- Begin with a Quiz on the assigned reading
- Discuss the assigned reading
- Practice one or two of the skills in the assigned
reading
- The Laboratory builds on topics learned in
Concepts.
42Engineering Journal
- Purpose - to help you truly learn the material
before the Quiz.
- Operational benefit - refer to it while you take
the Quiz!
- See con-policies.doc
sample-journal.doc
