Using (3 levels)
Setting it up
For different levels of expertise there are
different options as to how to begin your
presentation.
5
Using (wizard)
Novice
For those wanting a little more direction and
structure using the wizard is best.
Move through each step and answer the questions
according to your needs.
6
Using (templates)
Intermediate
If you feel that you need little guidance but do
not want to design your own templates you can
choose to use an existing presentation template.
7
Using (master)
Advanced
If you want to be free to design a completely
original presentation then you should experiment
with a blank presentation. The slide master can
be used to create your own unique templates.

Dressing it up (images)
Features
It is important that PowerPoint functions are not
over used. Use special features only when they
will add to your presentation. (view -gt
toolbars)

Dressing it up (animation)
Features
Animation Effects (including Power Plugs) (slide
show -gt custom animation) - use with discretion
Too much movement is distracting and annoying!

Dressing it up (links)
Features
Hyperlinks (insert -gt hyperlink) - Useful for
giving examples and for increasing the potential

Transferring the Presentation
  • Transparencies
  • Pack and Go
  • HTML

15
Transfer (transparencies)
Transferring the Presentation
Once you have completed your presentation you
must consider how you will be transferring the
presentation to the classroom.
Several options are possible 1. Print the
slides out and have them made into
transparencies. - buy printer
transparencies - copy shop in SUB
16
Transfer (pack and go)
Transferring the Presentation
2. Use the Pack and Go utility under File to
transfer your presentation onto disks. -
simple to follow wizard - may use more than one
disk - enables presentation to be uploaded on
any computer - take disk to copy shop to have
transparencies made (saves paper)
17
Transfer (HTML)
Transferring the Presentation
3. Save the presentation in HTML format so that
it can be accessed via the Internet. - post on
Internet - use FTP file transfer Note For
links to work effectively it is best to use a
presentation saved in HTML format.
DO NOT LEAVE TRANSPORT OF THE PRESENTATION TO THE
LAST MINUTE!
18
Design Considerations
  • Content over Design
  • Simplicity
  • Outline of Ideas
  • Appease the Audience

19
Content
Is the Content Clear?
- outline the essentials (use mini goals) - be
insightful and interesting - ASK QUESTIONS! -
make your point clearly and concisely
20
Consider (slides/overheads)
Consider the following
1. Will you use slides or overheads? -
Overhead transparencies must have lightness
contrast. Dark backgrounds are hard to print
and do not display well with an overhead
projector. Not enough light to dark
contrast. - Slides are easier to view in the
dark with dark backgrounds. To keep your
viewers from falling asleep use the lightness
contrast and adjust room lighting accordingly.
21
Consider (colour)
Consider the following
2. Colours can reflect content. - Using
bright colours gives your presentation a more
relaxed feel. - Light backgrounds with simple
template designs tend to appear professional
and elegant. - Try not to use opponent colours.
Blue - yellow and red - green combinations
should not even be placed together on the same
slide.
22
Consider (fonts)
Consider the following
3. Use text/fonts wisely. - Always use large
fonts (24 -gt up) when presenting. - Fill
slides no more than halfway. - Fonts that are
too abstract may be difficult for viewers to
read. - Do not use too many different fonts.
Consistency is good!
23
Consider (clutter)
Consider the following
4. Clutter is bad! - Use features like
movement, shading and graphics sparingly. - A
viewer can easily become lost in a vast display
of moving items and unnecessary graphics. -
Do not put more into a slide then it can
handle. Always leave blank space around the
outside edges of a slide.
24
Consider (centre)
Consider the following
5. Centre, centre, centre! - Centre all text
so that the viewer always knows where to look.
Remember, consistency!
25
Consider (simple)
Consider the following
6. Simplicity is good! - If you spend more
time designing your presentation than preparing
your content there is a problem. - Remember,
the point of a lecture is to effectively teach
a lesson to the class. - Use a similar
template for all lectures. Design must not
take away from content!
26
Consider (expertise)
Consider the following
7. Personal level of technological
expertise. - If you do not feel secure about
transferring a presentation to another computer
then stick with overhead transparencies. -
Always have a back up plan! Computers do fail
and you do not want to be left unable to
present your lecture.
27
The Most Awful Slide I Could Create
Design (a very bad slide)
This is a slide that could drive anyone insane!
GARBAGE
Can you even understand what some of the text
says?
Would you really want to WOW your audience like
this?
HEADACHE YET?
