  • To be responsible for the learning and teaching
methods and the general academic standard of the
    named module
  • communication with and co-ordination of all staff
associated with the module to ensure that all are
aware of their responsibilities for teaching and
marking assessed work at the start of the module.
  • Establish which staff are delivering on the
module (speak with associated subject group
    leader for this).
  • Organise a meeting prior to commencement of the
    module to discuss
  • Delivery of lectures
  • Responsibilities on respect of management of

7
  • The Role of the Module Leader
  • To ensure assessment details for the module are
    validated
  • To check that the assessment planned for the
module is in accordance with the validated
    document.
  • To complete all assessment within the relevant
    guidelines.
  • Obtain a copy of module descriptor
  • Establish timelines for collection, marking,
moderation and return of mark note return date
is date the marks are returned to the students so
admin need those 48 hours prior to that.
  • If employing examinations (and resit exams) in
the assessment of the module, to act as the lead
examiner in attending, as a minimum, the first
ten minutes of any exam and normally the whole
    exam.

8
  • The Role of the Module Leader
  • To provide students with a week by week module
outline using the faculty template as a standard
    guide
  • The module guide should be available via
    x-stream.
  • If taking over an existing module, refer to the
previous year to establish what has been taught
and if appropriate follow a similar pattern.
  • If taking over a new module, you will have to
plan an overview for the module.
  • If teaching a repeat module within the same year,
the module must remain the same for both
    semesters.
  • If teaching a module that you have previously
taught review of content should be modified where
possible during the review process of the
    previous year.

9
The Role of the Module Leader
  • Week by week outline should include details of
    content, associated readings and where
    appropriate directed activities. If possible,
additional work should be available should the
    lecture not take place.
  • Completion of each module equates to 150 hours of
which taught / contact time should equal between
20 and 30 hours. The remainder being made up of
tutorial support, student work and assessment. At
level 1 guidance on this may be more appropriate
    than at subsequent levels.
  • It is anticipated that 2 versions of a module
handbook will exist. The full version will go on
x-stream with an abbreviated version printed for
    students.

10
  • The Role of the Module Leader
  • Where there is a need to make staffing requests,
to ask the subject group leader for staffing
support and to assist in the recruitment of part
    time staff as necessary.
  • Where you feel it necessary to request additional
support this needs to be done as early as
possible in order that part time hour requests
can be submitted by the subject group leader to
the head of academic staff for approval.
  • A clear rationale will need to be provided for
    this for example expertise.
  • As module leader, you should try to identify any
appropriate staff although approaches must be
measured as employment may not be guaranteed.
  • Within this section, if you have a guest lecturer
you would like to invite, that should be passed
    through the subject group leader.

paperwork
  • Part time hours request

12
  • The Role of the Module Leader
  • To provide subject group leaders with details of
the preferred timetabling arrangements for the
    module.
  • To check published timetables for accuracy.
  • To ensure that any room changes including non use
    of rooms are confirmed.
  • During the review of each module, consideration
should be given to the timetabling of the module
    for the subsequent year.
  • Timetabling has some flexibility so you can
choose to do a long thin delivery for example
lecture and seminar per week, or a short fat
delivery over for example a 5 week period.
  • When planning for timetabling, consideration
needs to be given to the size of the group, the
number of seminar groups, the timings of the
lectures and its placement across semesters.
Practical facilities can sometimes be more
difficult to access during semester 1 than during
    semester 2.

13
  • The Role of the Module Leader
  • As much detail as possible needs to be provided
as possible to the subject group leader in the
allocated time. This information is then passed
on to timetabling for them to input.
  • The practice at the moment within the Faculty is
    to staff the timetable.
  • Once timetables have been produced, these will be
distributed to the associated member of staff for
checking, where changes need to be made, these
must be communicated to the subject group leader
who will then communicate them to the timetabling
    team.
  • If it is known that lectures will not be
    delivered during timetabled slots, then
notification to the subject group leader should
be made in order that bookings can be amended.

14
Associated Paperwork
  • Timetable preference
  • Timetable parameters

15
  • The Role of the Module Leader
  • To maintain a record of attendance for the
    module.
  • Registers of students tied to the module can be
    found on x-steam.
  • For some modules attendance is a requirement.
  • Attendance is deemed to be a cause for concern if
2 lectures in anyone module are missed. A letter
is held by admin regarding attendance and as
module leader you can request that one be sent.

needed. They should be completed and returned to

along with the originals for inclusion in the
module box. At this point a module leaders
evaluation needs to be completed and passed to
    the appropriate members of staff.

  • Requests need to be delivered no later than 48

report, any actions that have been taken as a
result of the evaluations and how this
information has been disseminated to any
interested party (for example student, level
leader, course leader, subject group leader).
