Title: Plant Taxonomy:

1
Plant Taxonomy
  • How Plants Are Named
  • Unit 2

2
Binomial System of Naming Plants
  • Originally they were given Latin and Greek names,
however this caused very long names
  • Swedish botanist Linnaeus
  • Simplified the classification into a binomial
    system
  • 2 name system---hence BInomial

3
Binomial
  • The first name is the generic name
  • All plants having the same generic name are in
    the same genus
  • noun
  • The second name is the specific name
  • All plants with the same specific name belong to
    the same species
  • Adjective (because it gives information about the
    plant

4
Species
  • Plants of the same species have the same
    characteristics and will consistently produce
    plants of the same types.
  • TODAYspecies are subdivided into varieties
  • One variety of a species resembles that of
another variety, but there are always subtle
    differences

5
Cultivar
  • Means cultivated variety

6
Plant Families
  • Genera (plural of genus)
  • Related genera with similar flower structures are
grouped into major units called families

7
Expressing Scientific Names
  • When Latin names are printed they are in italics.
  • Order they are written
  • Genus, species, cultivar
  • Genus is always with a capital letter
  • Species is always with a lower case letter
  • Cultivar is preceded by cv or the name is in
    (single quotes)

8
Taxonomist
  • Scientist who identify and classify plants are
    known as taxonomists
