2You must give credit whenever you use another
person's ideas, opinions, or theories in your
assignments (whether its a direct quote or
paraphrasing)
3A few definitions
- Citing - giving credit to someone elses ideas
in your assignment - Plagiarism - failing to give credit to someone
else's ideas in your assignment - Paraphrasing - not quoting a source directly,
but using their ideas or opinions by summarizing
them - Citation Style - the format used to cite sources
(e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.)
4Plagiarism
Using someone elses work (words, images,
ideas, phrases, signatures, or computations) and
presenting it as ones own, instead of properly
documenting every source. Seneca College
(2009). 2009-2010 Academic Policy, section
9.2. Retrieved September 22, 2009 from
http//www.senecac.on.ca/academic-policy/
5Plagiarism includes
- Buying or taking whole papers written by others
and submitting them as your own - Copying parts of someones work without giving
credit - Replacing only some words in anothers passage,
without giving credit - Putting together ideas from many different
people, without giving credit - Using your own paper in more than one course
6Possible punishment?
- See Academic Policy, section 9.3 and Appendix E
- 1st Receive a mark of 0 on the assignment and a
comment is placed on your transcript - 2nd Fail the course and be suspended from
Seneca College for 3 semesters or more - Further violations upon return? Be expelled
from Seneca College (mandatory withdrawal for
academic purposes)
7SafeAssign
- To support Academic Honesty at Seneca College,
all work submitted may be reviewed for
authenticity and originality using software tools
and third party services such as SafeAssign.
8To avoid plagiarism
- Take good research notes, keeping track of where
the information came from - Organize your paper carefully remember which
ideas are your own and which are not - When paraphrasing, be sure to put the information
in your own words dont just change a few words
here and there and give proper credit - Acknowledge all your sources using a citation
style such as APA
9APA Style
- You must cite sources in two places
- in the text of your paper
- in the References list at the end of your paper
- APA Style uses parenthetical reference citations
rather than footnotes or endnotes - (Sawyer, 2005, p.28)
- Parenthetical citations in the text of your paper
point the reader to more complete information in
the full References list - Sawyer, R. (2005). Kiss sell Writing for
advertising. Worthing, U.K. AVA Publishing.

11Remember this rule
- All sources cited in your paper must appear in
the References list and all sources included in
your References list must be cited within your
paper.
12ParentheticalReference Citations(or In-Text
Citations)
13Direct Quotation
- When using a direct quotation, include the
authors name and publication year, and a page
number or, for electronic resources, a heading
title paragraph number
According to one PG spokeswoman, the company
tries to follow the highest guidelines that we
can to protect our consumers (Neff, 2006, p.5).
14Paraphrasing
- When paraphrasing an idea, you do not have to
include a page number, but it can be useful for a
locating relevant passage
It is common for companies to have guidelines in
place that formally outline how they protect
their consumers (Neff, 2006).
15What if there is more than one author?
- 2 authors
- list both authors every time
- (Smith Jones, 1998)
- 3 to 5 authors
- list all authors the first time and then just the
first author with et al. each time after that - 1st (Baker, Stewart, James, 2000)
- All following citations (Baker et al., 2000)
- 6 or more authors
- list first author with et al. every time
- (Green et al., 2006)
16What if the author is unknown?
- If author is actually named as anonymous
- But if there is no author information at all
- include the first few words of the title
- use italics for books, magazines, brochures,
reports or web sites (see example below) - use quotation marks for articles or chapters
In a recent groundbreaking article (Anonymous,
2005), several assumptions were made
One report (Marketing Research, 2004) asserts
that more than 20 of advertising professionals
are
17Long Quotations
- Place quotations longer than 40 words in a
single-spaced free-standing block - begin a new line
- indent 5 spaces from left margin
- do not use quotation marks
- ensure accuracy spelling, punctuation, etc.
- citation should come after the closing
punctuation mark
18Long Quotation Example
These are the latest examples, but it's
Accenture that has probably made the biggest
splash so far in the marketing seas. Following
its purchase last year of Media Audits, its
marketing sciences division now audits about 15
of the U.S. TV market, including the budgets of
major marketers such as Ford and Wal-Mart. The
division's CEO, Jeffrey Merrihue, describes the
effect in no less dramatic terms than "a tidal
wave, and one that's already had some concrete
effect." Mr. Merrihue said the firm's analysis is
serving as "the foundation" for the media portion
of Wal-Mart's ongoing review. (Creamer, 2006,
p.1)
Regarding Wal-Mart, one article stated that
19References List
