2Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
State of the present chapter The present
chapter 10 09 Manure Management Regarding
Nitrogen Compounds dates from 2002 Aims of the
new version
- Updating the data base
- Improving the calculation procedure
Update 10 09, 2006 2
3Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
- Structure of the present chapter remains
unchanged - Compounds considered ammonia, nitric oxide,
nitrous oxide - Minor changes Definitions extended
- Major change Detailed methodology revised
Update 10 09, 2006 3
4Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
Comprehensive treatment of the nitrogen flow in
animal husbandry means All N compounds in ONE
calculation procedure, which is related to energy
balance and C flow calculations Calculation
procedures shall not contradict other existing UN
ECE documents and shall be in in line with IPCC
methodologies.

Update 10 09, 2006 5
6Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
- The detailed method is a stepwise approach
(cook book approach) - Identification of relevant animal numbers
- (proposing relevant subcategories)
- Calculation of the amount of N excreted per
animal or place in the house, in yards or during
grazing and - calculation of the TAN excreted per animal or
place in the house, in yards or during grazing - including inputs with bedding material and
various housing systems for most animal
categories
Update 10 09, 2006 6
7Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
Housing In the animal house, only NH3 emissions
are considered. Relative emission factors are
obtained from other UN ECE documents (such as the
Framework Advisory Code of Good Agricultural
Practice). Absolute figures are proposed for the
reference system
Update 10 09, 2006 7
8Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
- Storage
- Calculation of the amount of N immobilized in
solid systems and of the N emitted as N2O, NO and
NH3 during storage considering various storage
types for liquid and solid systems - N2O emissions are treated as in the IPCC
guidelines (transformation to TAN based emission
factors necessary) - NO emission factors ordered (will be available
in time)
Update 10 09, 2006 8
9Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
Application Only NH3 emissions directly related
to spreading are considered. Relative emission
factors are obtained from other UN ECE documents
(such as the Framework Advisory Code of Good
Agricultural Practice). Absolute figures are
proposed for the reference system. When the N
has passed the soil surface, subsequent emissions
are treated as emissions from plants and soil.

10Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
Most tables in the present 10 09 are
placeholders, to be discussed between the expert
panel members in the near future (volunteers
needed!). 10 09 will contain an appendix with
national values (as before). This appendix will
also be updated in order to cover a wider
geographical area (volunteers needed).
Update 10 09, 2006 10
11Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
- What needs to be done?
- The IPCC draft version of Modul 4 of the 2006
Guidelines is likely to be available soon. Data
are to be compared and incorporated (N excretion
defaults N2O emission factors) -
- The chairmen will try to write a final draft in
May 2006. - The chapter will be circulated and discussed
between (volunteers) and sent to the Task Force
secretariat in July/August.
Update 10 09, 2006 11
12Updating Chapter 10 09 AEIG
- Promised in the Guidelines
- Technical support
- A worked example of the use of these steps is
provided at the TFEIP web-site
- Questions likely to remain open
- Treatment of poultry in the detailed methodology
