2What is the Council of Trent?
- The Council of Trent was the 19th Ecumenical
Council of the Roman Catholic Church - It is considered to be one of the Churchs most
important councils - The Council standardized the Mass throughout the
church, largely by abolishing local variations
3- The Council of Trent was convened in Trento three
times between December 13, 1545 and December 4,
1563 - The Council commissioned a revised Breviary and
Missal. - The Council was first delayed and sometimes
suspended because of resistance from the popes
and revolt against the emperor - The Council of Trent was the most impressive
embodiment of the ideals of the
Counter-reformation.
4Main Objective of the Council
- To condemn the principles and doctrines of
Protestantism and to define the doctrines of the
Catholic Church on all disputed points - To effect a reformation in discipline of
administration - The Churchs interpretation of the bible was
final. Any Christian who substituted his or her
own interpretation was a heretic

salvation was defined, following controversy over
Martin Luthers Doctrine of justification of
faith alone. 5) Other Catholic practices that
drew the ire of reformers within the church, such
as Indulgences, pilgrimages, the veneration of
saints and relics , and the veneration of the
Virgin Mary were strongly reaffirmed.

- This council was considered one of the most
important councils in the history of the church. - The council following Trent was the First Vatican
Council. - This council was presided by Pope Paul III, Pope
Julius III, and Pope Pius IV. - The main outcomes of this council were seventeen
dogmatic decrees, covering all aspects of
Catholic Religion
