MN State Only Events
  • You compete in these events at districts and
    state..NOT NATIONALS
  • If you place 1st-3rd at state, you may attend
    nationals to participate in a leadership academy
  • You may compete in 1 or 2 of the following
    events.
  • All are INDIVIDUAL EVENTS

MN State Only Events
  • Public Speaking (2008 Topic)
  • When you are talking to business people in your
    community about DECA, they arent familiar with
    the program. Your local Chamber of Commerce has
    invited you to speak about DECA at their upcoming
    meeting. During this time, your chapter advisor
    suggests it may be important to tell them about
    the conferences, the program of competitive
    events, community service projects, and other
    areas where your chapter is specifically
    involved.
  • You've been granted 3-5 minutes to address the
    Chamber.

MN Events Cont..
  • Soft Line Sales Typically, retail mens,
    womens and childrens apparel items sold by a
    sales person on a sales floor.
  • Hard Line Sales Typically, retail home
    appliances and tools, sports and recreation
    equipment, and electronics sold by a sales person
    on a sales floor.
  • General Line Sales Typically, home furnishings,
    cosmetics, jewelry/gift items, toys and computer
    software sold by a sales person on a sales floor.

National Events
  • You compete in these events at district, state,
    and nationalsif you qualify.
  • Must place in top 12 at districts to advance to
    state, and top 3 at state to qualify for
    nationals
  • There are 2 categories.Series and Written
  • Some are individual, some are team events

Series Events, Individual or Team
  • You may select to compete in EITHER the
    individual or the MDM Team.NOT BOTH.
  • For both events, you take the written test which
    is worth 100 points (I have sample tests for you
    to study from!)
  • You are given the role play the day of
    competition ( I have sample role plays for you to
    practice with)

  • 2 role plays- 10 min to prepare, 10 to present

  • 1-3 people for each event
  • May select only 1 type of written project to
    compete in
  • Must place in top 12 at districts to advance to
    state, must place in top 3 at state to advance to
    nationals

Written Projects- Marketing Research Events
  • In challenging economic times, some local
    businesses will have declining sales while others
    might weather the conditions well. In either
    case, understanding customer spending patterns
    and trends can be critical to business success.
    The 2009 topic is the development of marketing
    strategies based on the results of marketing
    research.
  • Identify how a company can maintain and expand
    its current customer base.
  • Develop a plan to implement your strategy.

  • Your business will fall into one of the following
    areas. The topic is the same for all 4. Paper is
    30 pages! 15 min presentation.
  • Business Financial Services Marketing
  • General Marketing
  • Hospitality Recreation Marketing
  • Retail Marketing

  • Papers are 10 pages in length
  • The following are each events guidelines
  • Advertising Campaign
  • 100 point test,1-3 people for event, 20 min
    present
  • Fashion Promotion Plan
  • 1 person for event, no test, 20 min present
  • Tech Sales
  • 100 point test, 1 person for event, 20 min present

  • Quiz Bowl
  • Roseville will have a team that will compete at
    state.
  • 1-4 people, quizzed on various DECA and Marketing
    questions
  • Go directly to state competition

Special Events- Chapter Projects (optional)
  • 1-3 people per project
  • 30 page paper, 15 min presentation
  • Compete at State, not districts
  • Plan an event for the chapter to participate in
  • Events will fall into one of the following areas

  • Creative Marketing
  • Entrepreneurship Promotion
  • Learn and Earn Project
  • Public Relations Project

  • You must compete in 2-3 events, can be a
    combination of the following
  • Select 1 or 2 MN State Only Events
  • Select individual or team series events
  • Select 1 written project
  • You may compete in Quiz Bowl or Chapter Projects
    in addition to your 2-3 events
